Steven, I usually agree with what you have to say, but you're wildly off the mark here.

If a woman tells you she's 37 and she's 40, big deal? What kind of argument is that? As Ana and Dan said, there's a lot bigger difference between 15 and 17 and 19 than ages upwards of 25.

If the couple who are engaged are not having sex because she is underage, that somehow validates this engagement? Are you guys out of your minds!? If your SO is so young that it's not legal to consummate the relationship, um... I'm not sure what I should be needing to say here.

If our laws in our country allow for child brides, that's equally wrong. Not any more right than picking out your child bride from Southeast Asia. I will say, though, that people who seek out very young, teeny-tiny, weak-English speaking women, are looking for--dare I say it--Mail Order Brides. GROSS.

I hate the fact that American men have apparently been raised to seek out these inappropriate relationships. Something is obviously wrong with society at large, and Steven, I can't believe you are condoning it.

Alex, perhaps I used a bad example of my point which was that 'Ana and Dan' were arguing that it would be a relationship built on a lie - and he later emphasized that to him all lies are equal. So I was trying to say that not all lies are equal - women lying about their age is common and I was trying to ask him if he would break up with a woman if he found out she lied to him about her age. I am not defending the fact that the OP's fiancee lied about her age. I have a 16 yr. old daughter and I'd bust an artery if I found out she was misrepresenting her age to meet older men, but I felt compelled to defend the OP because 'Ana and Dan' were outright calling him a pedaphile which is outrageously slanderous. The OP would not have come on this forum seeking advice regarding this issue if in fact he was a pedaphile. His intentions to me appear to be sincere and I am hesitant to make any false, negative assumptions about the vaildity of the relationship. I realize that even with lying about age - there are varying degrees. I was really tired last night if that can be my excuse..

I still think a lot of these relationships are a little sick. There is one poster on here who is always referring to his Ukrainian wife like he bought her at Sam's Club. He's always got comments like "I hope you are as satisfied with your Eastern European wife as I am with mine" etc. Or "you will find Eastern European have x or y quality."

But the ones with the Filipina 12-year-olds freak me out the most. Isn't there something wrong with you if you had to go shopping for a mate?

If you are referring to having sex with a 15 year old female in Thailand as illegal, you are incorrect. In Thailand, this is legal. I am not passing judgement as to whether or not this is proper, but your statement about this being illegal is incorrect.

Perhaps this thread should be moved to 'Off Topic' - we seem to be discussing the morality of marriage at young age and what family law should be in this regard rather than immigration and what immigration law is.

Yes, I agree, Alex. I know that statistic wise, there are a lot of members here on VJ that have essentially shopped for a spouse, but something I've kind of surrendered to after reading the posts here on VJ is that many people have different ideas about relationships and marriage. If that's their thing, then I'm hesitant to blatantly criticize them for it. However, if I could change the law, I would require that both parties be at least 21, whether it's a foreigner or not. I just don't think anyone who is under 21 really has the emotional maturity to handle marriage. I've also said before that I support the IMBRA law at least in it's intentions to address the problems with marriage brokers who treat marriage and particularly women as a commodity.

I may be one of the "sick" people you were referring to because I am a 27 year-old male and my fiance is a 17 year-old female. I am from the US, as I imagine you are, and we would call this "sick", wouldn't we? At least we could probably agree that it's definitely not the norm in my home country. Obviously, we disagree on the "sick" part. What I think you should understand for your future generalizations, at least in my particular case, is that I did not go on sampling mission "of all the women to marry abroad" and "find a minor to marry." I actually fell in love with my fiance over a period of about two months within which she lied to me and told me she was 19. Yeah, ever heard of that little trick? I couldn't blame her though. If I knew she was only 17, I probably would have been gone and never given us a chance, which is why she lied. But I wasn't given that chance and I am extremely happy at this point that I wasn't. My point is that not everyone asking these questions is on a trip abroad to "find" a wife. The world's hardly ever black and white so ease up on the stereotypes.

I'm sorry but I agree with Sir Lancelot. Whenever I've visited Thailand the average 17 year old appears a lot more niave than your average american teenager.

You guys want to take these nieve children who have only ever lived with their parents and then bring them to a foreign country with no family or friends around them?

I know when I was 18 the person I was then is completely different to the one I am now. I was still a child even though I did leave home at 18 I still missed my parents and went home nearly every other weekend.

Luckily I wasn't in a foreign country, where this wasn't possible.

I don't think that these girls should be able to enter this process untill they are 21 either as I think that is when you go from being a girl to becoming a woman.
