The Ketchup Konspiracy

My kids love ketchup and we can easily go through a couple of huge, plastic bottles from Costco in about a month. I loved ketchup too as a kid but I never remember me and my 4 brothers going through as much ketchup as my 2 kids do. Anyhow, I have noticed over the years that ketchup has changed but now I have confimation! I found a bottle of organic ketchup at Trader Joe's and bought it. It's sugar content is half of what Heinz has in their's. I used it for the first time last night and it's got zing! Full of flavor - so much flavor that I used very little - a lot less than when using the Heinz. Now I'm wondering if I'll be able to ween my kids of the sugary Heinz for the real thing. No wonder Heinz sells huge, plastic bottles of ketchup - it's like crack for kids.

Not really a huge conspiracy if you read labels.

(I've had allergies for years and have to be very careful what products I choose...)

You could mix the ketchup without telling them. Cut in the trader joes and eventually end up with 100% TJ.

I always loved mustard as a kid and still go through a lot of it. It's my 'crack'. ;)

I once had a 5 gallon tub from Costco...it had birthdays in my fridge  And when I left my ex, I felt compelled to take my mustard with me

Mustard is way better for you in general health terms and they don't usually cut it with loads of sugar. ;)

I've just started liking mustard in the last few years...hated it as a kid. (Really like the dijon and brown ones versus the yellow ones.)

Mustard is awesome. The spicier the better.

But I used to like Ketchup as a kid as well, and now I can't stand it. Too sweet and all (even in Germany where Heinz Ketchup has less sugar, no HFCS, and comes in odd flavors, like Curry or Chili).

Same here. I even ordered the pump for it. :)

My new favorite is Sandwich Pal. All their mustards are good and i love their jalapeno mustard.

Long live Coleman's English mustard. Mustard as it's supposed to be.

The Canadian Heinz ketchup is way better then the American Heinz Ketchup.... The Americans sweeten thiers with corn syrup and add a bunch of artifical ####### :P .... the Canadians sweeten it with sugar and use more natural ingredients

I used to be addicted to Mayo...I would eat it on pretty much all that I coud...but I got over it. Ditto on the mustard. Hubby is into it now too. I have never tried variations of mustard though. Have to go out and get some. Ketchup is a little too much for me. I don't even have it on fries. I usually go for BBQ sauce or little Mayo and hot sauce mixed together. Yummers!

Oh and about kids and ADHD...I totally think it's their diet. I worked with kids who were labelled as having behavior problems but the only time I noticed them getting out of hand was right after a snack and lunch, both of which included processed food and overcooked canned veggies. They showed this school on tv where they eliminated processed foods and saw an increase in attentiveness and decrease of behavior problems. I definitely don't think drugs are the solution. It seems like every other kid is being prescribed meds for ADHD.

Heinz also has an Organic ketchup, its just harder to find. There's only one grocery store here in town that sells it.

The only other brand I've found that does not put high fructose corn syrup in ketchup is Del Monte. Its still got sugar, but not as much as other brands, and is real sugar, not over processed corn syrup :P
