Alan, even facebook has now acknowledged that American English is divergent from UK English. Shouldn't you? If your point is to somehow guilt Americans into conforming to your version of the language, you're in for a fruitless endeavor.

If I was suggesting that anything outside the USA is somehow more correct, then I would agree that there is no audience for that. I have it on good authority (Mitt Romney) that the USA is 'the finest nation that has ever existed in the history of the world'

It's logical and quite right therefore that they should not have to learn anything from anyone

However, what I am suggesting is, that the uneducated parts of the USA, use the same American language as the educated parts of the USA

I done brung this to your attention for that purpose

Actually, I understand why you are touchy on this subject. My wife mentions it all the time. She has noticed US sayings are permeating the language outside the US and is worried that the "Queen's English" is dying, or so she says. Though American's have also protected some words that are no longer used in the UK.

Btw. Drug is not an acceptable in American English but pled is.

You done whinging yet Alan? I think Canada and Australia could use some of that undue concern of yours. They don't speak perfect Queens English either, yet they manage to escape your ire.

I am comparing uneducated USA to Educated USA

Its safer that way to avoid automatic reactions

The more schooled parts of the USA don't seem to use 'drug' as in 'he was drug down the road'

I know the Nativists would like to make out that I am comparing to England so that I am automatically wrong, but I haven't mentioned England (purposely)in order to avoid that defense of the indefensible

I am comparing usage within the USA

I know the Nativists hate that as they find it easier to deal with foreign country comparisons. It's much easier as foreign countries and foreigners are automatically wrong.

When a foreign person compares one part of US society with another part of US society, the Nativist seem confused and bring other English speaking countries into it to try and steer it round to an 'us versus them' with which they are more comfortable

In this case they can't, and have to face up to a sizable part of American society speaking badly - not by my standards, not by England's standards, but by the standards of educated Americans.

Now the only way that this statement can be unacceptable is via the 'anti-intellectual' argument which rejects people who are well educated (such as the President)and prefers cowboys (like Bush) and their way of life and their way of speaking

Hope you fellers don't mind I done brung it up

Since when did you regard me as your friend ?

In what way do you think my statement disqualifies me as a rational person ?

You Nativists are always fast with your conclusions as they are pre-packed and ready to consume, but slow with you explanations

It has nothing to do with American English being different and all to do with Americans getting lazy with the English language. It's one step closer to Ebonics.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Alan,

I agree with you. There is a certain standard American English that I think should be taught in school. I am from the north, now living in the south. I have also taught English as a Second Language. I have noticed big differences in the language from living in different places around the country - New York, Boston, LA, San Francisco, Michigan and now North Carolina. I have to keep reminding my son not to say certain things he is picking up here, like "I been having that.." or "I might should do that..." or "we will do that on tomorrow." Yiiiiiiikkkkkkeeeees! This is the way people talk over the intercom within the school system. I have to also say, having a sister-in-law who is English, I do admire how she can express herself eloquently without all the verbiage. I think when you have to sit there for five minutes trying to figure out what someone means, because you aren't from that part of the country, a little standard language is required.

At last, someone who has the comprehension skills to realise I am not comparing to English - English or OZZY-English or Nelson Mandala English or Ozzy-Osbourne English

ok I am on the side and satisfied

As a second nation American (we who were here for hundreds of years before the present, or third nation Americans), I don't so much blame the huddled masses, as those who perpetuate the mistakes of the 17th century illiterates

In fact the southern states were settled by the South Western English (eg Somerset) who still use words like 'brung' today. The BBC 'Archers' program has lots of that stuff

Let's hope Sarah doesn't get any further or I really will have something to complain about - she was slapping cod's heads and casting out devils (heck back on topic) when she should have been at school doing geography

Alaskan witches !

'my bad' that's my other per hate - I had forgotten it - it sounds like a Spanish speaker who knows only a tiny bit of English - what's all that about ?

Your bad what ? I always think ... I think it might be an attempted translation of 'me culpe'

Perhaps it's text speak in which case that's ok as it's kept within the ranks of the Jersey Shores brigade

makes as much sense as Jehovah's witnesses when he hasn't even been charged with anything

doesn't every language spoken get bastardized by different regions of whatever country you're in?

It's out of hand imo. I worked with a welder from Maine who didn't know the letter "R" existed. I mean ####### is a "caw". Are these people retarded ? I mean they must have English classes back east with the Alphabet. And last time I checked there was a letter "R" in it.

It gets worse though. Iv'e been on the radio up on the slope with hands from East Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana who didn't even speak legible English. I got so p*ssed that when I got back to camp to told them to say the fk off the radio until they learned legible English, otherwise get the fk out of the country for the fact it was obvious they weren't American. That one started WW3 up there. But seriously is it only the Northwest part of the USA that actually knows how to speak English in this country ? I mean ####### I thought we all went to English classes here .
