Hi all,

I have been searching around and couldn't find the answer for this question. I am in the process of getting an L1 visa to work in the US. I was planning on getting an Argentinian "Civil Union" relationship (opposite sex) and was wondering if that would allow my partner to get an L2 visa.

I saw comments about this saying that as long as it is opposite sex there's no problem, and others stating that the best is to get married.

Can anyone please help me out on this one?

Thanks in advance!

Does an Argentinian civil union count as being married in that country? If not, then you would need to be married.

If it's not a marriage then I don't think that it would be sufficient.

Thanks Anh map. Is a legal figure similar to being married, but with different responsibilities/permits (you can't adopt, to name just one).

And thank you too Harsh_77, it is a document, but I will find out more about it just to be sure.

Yea I would say is you 2 need to be legally married otherwise its not going to hold any water.

Here is the simple reasoning, say for example if I was gettgin L1 then I can take anyone with me and say they are my civil partner and can smuggle them in the country.

So to avoid that consulate will only accept something like a marriage certificate, which show you guys are legally married and she is part of your life and they would issue her L2 in order for you to continue your life without disturbing it.

You could take to your lawyer about an accompanying B2 Visa.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Thanks again! We do receive a certificate that states that she is my partner, but as you said I am not sure if it will be enough to prove the need for her relocation. I will get in touch with the embassy to get a better understanding on this matter, and post my findings in here afterward.

Much better to speak to your Lawyer.

You can get some weird comments from calling the Consulate.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

He is going through the L process, the Lawyer will have been appointed by his Employer.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
