I had a 'GM' card in the UK with £10k credit limit - I asked GM in the USA if they would give me a card based on that.

They gave me a card with a 500 dollar limit for starters !

I thought that was wonderful...

People might try getting a card from a US bank in their own country before leaving - and then do the same....

Stewart's credit history in the US:

1. Upon arrival, got connected to my bank account (added his name).

2. Got a secured credit card from Bank of America. Low limit, but at least it was helping his credit.

3. After about 6 months, he applied for a credit card through an offer he was sent...an American Express - he gets it!!

4. Last weekend, we bought a car and....

his credit was bigger than mine...727 at this point!! He hasn't even been here a year. The car guy had to use my credit too - even thoguh stewarts was higher, my history was longer...

Anyway that's how we did it :)

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

After reading all this, I'm surprised at how easy it was for me to get a credit card at NationalCity, and I'm not even a permanent resident yet. I brought statements for my bank accounts in Canada, but they just wanted to see my passport and driver's license. (And maybe something that showed my US address, but I don't remember.) They also asked me to sign an extra piece of paper because I'm a foreigner. I have a checking account with that bank, and I deposited $500 into it when I opened it. I don't know whether that was a factor.

My application was flagged right away because I'm a foreigner, and they might still be watching my account, but that's OK. I'm just happy to have that credit card account. :)

Recently approved for a $7000 MasterCard from my local HSBC branch. I was shocked. I'm not even a resident yet, I have no job, and I'm not in school! My husband and I have a joint bank account at HSBC with a couple of CDs, but other than that, it seems that they only looked at "household income".
