fiance does not have VN passport in time for April's interview

Hello Everyone!

My fiance does not have his Vietnam passport yet, and his interview is on April 20th. He told me that it takes 30 days for the Vietnamese government to issue a passport.

My question to you is this, should he just leave the portion that ssks about his passport information blank on the DS 156 form? Or will HCMC create problems for us?

In the Appointment packet, it says it requires an original and copy of the applicant's passport along with the other required items listed.

Will HCMC allow him to go to the interview without his passport or can we ask them to postpone our interview because he does not have his passport yet? :help: Thanks for all your input! :D

Don't leave anything on a form blank.

Given your current situation, I suggest you request a reschedule.

A passport is required for the interview because in order for the Consulate to issue a visa, they must have the passport so they can put the visa sticker inside. Therefore, wait until you have the new passport and then fill out the passport information on the DS-156. If time goes by and you see that you will not get the new passport before the interview, you will have to re-schedule the interview.

I believe the Consulate requires a valid passport for at least 8 months AFTER the date it was issued/created. Even if you do get a new passport before the interview, I do not know how strictly the Consulate will enforce the 8 month validity requirement. I hope somebody with more knowledge on this will give their advise on this. Best of luck.

It doesn't look like it's going to be created on time then, since the interview is less than 1 month away. Also, does anyone know why they require the passport to be valid for at least 8 months from the date it was issued?

In any case, it looks like we have to reschedule our interview, even with the reschedule interview, the passport that would be issued to my fiance would still not be valid for at least 8 months though...I feel very helpless in this situation.

Has anyone's beneficiary gone to the interview with a newly issued passport and was not given a hard time? Please let me know your experience!

So when I email the Consulate to reschedule my interview, should I tell them that my fiance doesn't have his passport yet, or should I tell them, we don't have all the documentation yet. I'm leaning towards the 'we don't have all the documentation yet',but I want to know what others think. :)

Like I said, if you do end up getting a passport before the interview, I don't know how strictly the Consulate will enforce the 8 month validity issue. For all we know, they could just accept the new passport the way it is. I don't know. I am hoping that somebody with more experience will give a better answer.

I'm hoping for the same thing as well! I would hate for us to have to reschedule the interview and finding out that, his passport is valid. Wish us luck!

not sure why you guys didn't plan for the most important document in the whole process...but we did get a passport for my 8 month old son (he's K-3 attached to his mother's K-1), and the turnaround was 2 weeks in Thanh Hoa. Not sure if he even needs a passport but we got it just in case. I don't want to give the CO any reason to delay a pink slip.

I think you may be confused. The passport must have at least 8 months before it expires. There is no requirement for having the passport for 8 months.

yea VN passports are good for 5 years. i would still try to get the passport before 4/20 and not rescheduling if possible. maybe try to find someone to "expedite" the process (slip him some cafe money?)

Roger,

Are you sure about that? I re-read P4 from the Consulate's website and it states "Passport valid for at least eight months past the date of issuance" I don't see it mention anything about 8 months before it expires. Did the Consulate update P4 recently on their website? I have a copy from Jan 2011. Is there a more recent version?
