hi there all, I am starting the (hopefully) pain-free process fo DCF in Tokyo, Japan in the near future.

A little history:

I'm from US, she's Japanese

2003 - Met her at a party in Japan

2003 - 2005 dropped everything and moved to Japan for two years to be with her =)

2005-2006 returned to the US to get life going again - proposed marriage while in japan april 2006

June 2006 - She came to visit me in the US for a week

July 2006 - I get a call "you're going to be a father!" (hurray!)

Sept 2006 - in Japan to get married, my parents coming to the ceremony from US

She is planning to have the baby in Japan, although I am wondering how this will effect our DCF process

basically, we will start the DCF process as soon as possible, and hopefully she can recieve her visa before the baby is born. I am thinking that if she already has the visa before the child is born then will I need to also get a visa for the child? Or shoudl we try to have her deliver in the US? Will her pregnancy inhibit the visa process?

Your thoughts appreciated

Congratulations on,well, everything! :)

The DCF in Japan takes 30-90 days--the previous poster might not be familiar with Tokyo and DCF. Your STB wife can start ordering her police certificate and other documents now, and you can have your entire case ready to take to the Consulate as soon as you get your marriage certificate. You'll want to complete your I-864 while you are in the US and have access to all your documents.

If the baby were born overseas, you would simply register her birth at the Consulate; she would be a US citizen by virtue of you being dad and would get a US passport to travel to the US--no visa required.

You should plan to have the baby where your wife wants to! Being pregnant will not inhibit her visa process. Bear in mind the cost of a delivery in the US.

Best wishes!
