I couldn't believe it when I heard this. His poor family. I really liked him too and thought he was pretty crazy- especially his super short safari shorts.

Sounds like the drooling over a dead man's shorts in an overwhelming urge. I would nominate you for a Pulitzer prize for that perfectly rousing yet reassuring message . (F)

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Yes, BBC are reporting that the sting was straight to the heart.

Yes that's right.

Right where the news hit me. :(

hey Chas, me too--it's sort of hard to explain, not knowing the guy and all, but it's so. Thank you for your posts; I'm really surprised in an unhappy way to read this thread--I have to say, on the 10 or so page thread at another similar website, the comments have been more in your vein.

For those of you fixated on the packaging, try looking a little bit deeper. Here's a guy who committed his life, family and work to something worthwhile for the greater good. He is/was/continues to be an inspiration to any of us.

(F)(F) RIP Mr Irwin

Im with you too Chas and thank you for your posts. This is so so sad and is a great loss and my condolences go out to his wife, children, his family and friends.

Note: It has been reported in Oz that it wasn't the sting that killed him as they carry very little venom and not deadly, but the fact that the barb acted like a bayonet piercing his heart. All is ok until it is removed. :(

Steve was my hero, he lived a hero and died a hero. I am utterly devasted by the loss of such a wonderful, passionate and compassionate man who had a genuine love for animals and wanted to teach the world about them. I feel such a empty feeling inside right now and havent stop crying since I heard the news. My heart goes out to Terri his wife and his two kids Bindi and Bob. God really does take the good people away. RIP Steve, you were an inspiration to us all.

Thank you for adding this, wenchie. This is the rarest and oddest accident I can imagine--I'm a diver and spend a lot of time in the water--I ahve never even heard this was possible and the DAH and I were sitting there going 'huh?!' not able to imagine how one could die from a ray barb. Straight thru the ribs and into the heart? Too weird.

sigh. And Terri is from our neck of the woods, tho I hope she stays in her new home and keeps the work going.

Well, there are going to be differences of opinion as to whether or not he was a great individual, whether or not he was a loon, and whether or not he died because of his own negligence. Go figure.

How many of you would argue that you'd like to go out in any less of a fashion than he did? That being doing what he loved.

How much more perfect could the end be? One moment you are immersed in a task you were born to do then suddenly there is just darkness, opposed to languishing on death's bed in illness?

That'd be my way to go.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Hear Hear.

I'm sure he'd have it no other way. His friend actually stated through tears in a press conference that Steve went doing what he loved best.
