Seemed to me he took a lot of unnecessary risks. Lot of other TV naturalists got close to nature without playing for ratings.

Sad he's dead, but from a creature that isn't usually deadly there's a kind of irony there I suppose.

I agree, and like MDYoung said, its a twist of fate that he got killed by an animal that isn't deadly, considering all the other deadly animals he has been around.

I loved to watch his shows, and thought he was funny, though I didn't understand why he always had to get so close to a lot of the animals.

He will be missed, and my heart goes out to the family he left behind.

Sure, he was a little over the top, but I always appreciated his zest for life and his family's passion for protecting wildlife. Sad to see this happened. :(

Steve showed many of us a Passion for what was important to oneself.. showed us how to understand life... that every creature has a beauty... weather it is the Mumba.. the croc or a simple terantula... or a butterfly.. Steve showed us these creature up close and without harm... I honor the man for the gifts he has given us in our lives..

Go fly a kite. This bloke knew that sooner or later he was going to die..and in case you dont know, he had a US greencard and went though AOS like all of you on this site....so if you cant get a simple joke, blame your genetics and your parents, not me.

I would rather fly a kite than be a heartless idiot like yourself.

My parents are the best I could of wished for, genetics and all, If i was you i REALLY would not even go there.

Humans don't move as quickly under water as on land.. he came over the top (and probably cast sharp shadow over the animal spooking it into defensive posture with only defense it has.. stab n run) and since he was in water couldnt leap outa the way as I'm sure he tried to do.

Sure he was a professional, but still human and able to make mistakes. As has been posted, it was a freak accident. He did a lot for animal awareness and conservation. More so than most awareness programs combined.

He will be missed by many ppl.

hey Chas, me too--it's sort of hard to explain, not knowing the guy and all, but it's so. Thank you for your posts; I'm really surprised in an unhappy way to read this thread--I have to say, on the 10 or so page thread at another similar website, the comments have been more in your vein.

I know it is so weird I was not a huge fan of his show and would sometimes make fun of him by mimicking him when I would talk about something but the news hit me so hard. My mom felt the same when I told her.
