California Dreaming?

By Susan Tully, FAIR National Field Director

Californians have been waiting since the dot.com bust, followed by the housing market burst, for jobs to come back to California. With a looming budget deficit of more than $20 billion and the state unemployment rate over 12%, one would expect to find California legislators burning the midnight oil in search of sound fiscal practices to restore financial health to one of the world's biggest economies.

But Tuesday, March 15, 2011, one month before taxpayers in California are required to pony-up their share of the fiscal burden of running the state, lawmakers in the California Higher Education Committee of the Assembly passed AB130 and AB131. These bills, dubbed the "Dream Act 2", will grant financial aid and scholarships to illegal alien college students enrolled in California universities, colleges, community colleges, and technical schools. This new legislation will cost California taxpayers an additional $2-3 million annually, on top of the in-state tuition illegal aliens already receive, which was granted to them in 2001 by the California Legislature, in violation of U.S. Immigration Law.

One illegal alien student, Jorge Fierros, 31, of Riverside California, who was interviewed by the Press Enterprise while lobbying for passage of AB 130 and AB131, said he has been at Riverside City College for more than four years because with the full-time factory, construction and restaurant jobs he's held, he has been unable to take more than a class or two each semester. The bills "would help me focus more on my academics than having to work so much on the side to help me pay for tuition," said Fierros, who hopes to transfer to Cal State San Bernardino in the fall to study criminal justice.

You ask yourself, "Did I read that correctly"? An illegal alien, illegally present in the country, working at a job he is not legally entitled to hold, will be given aid, provided by hardworking taxpayers, or in this case, many unemployed taxpayers, to attend school, so he can study "criminal justice"?

The cliche "Are you kidding me?" or "This is a joke...right?" comes to mind. Because simply... it's unbelievable, it's absurd and unconscionable, to reasonable, law abiding people. But because it is true, we are calling for all the support we can muster, to help our activists in California stop the insanity that is taking place. These bills are currently moving on to the Committee on Appropriations in the Assembly. Please help us defeat AB130 and AB131.

Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed identical legislation in the past stating, "given the precarious fiscal condition the state faces at this time, it would not be prudent to place additional demands on our limited financial aid resources as specified in this bill." But Governor Brown campaigned in support of the Dream Act, and all indications are, he will sign these bills if they pass through both houses of the legislature. Your help is needed now.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Now that Moonbeam is Governor, nothing is a sure bet.

"The governor continues to support the principles behind the Dream Act," said Evan Westrup, a spokesman for Brown.

Is this not typical California or what ? If that state had a brain it would be considered dangerous.

This is why I keep saying that the US needs to get rid of California, build a giant wall around it and don't let em in the US unless it's on a 90 day visitor visa for a one time a year shot. I seriously detest California and all it stands for.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

You have to live here to appreciate it. The counties are fairly autonomous, and they screw the pooch plenty on their own. The state government is more, or less, a slight hindrance, as we haven't had an effective one in decades. But they do build highways, with generous Federal matching funds for the more affluent counties, and that is the only reason we keep them around.

Ive' thought about this for years...and it's doable. The US could annex everything from Redding up to the Oregon border. That leaves the US with plenty of access to the Pacific...the new state (Pacific), Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The ones up north like Redding, Shasta, Ukiah, etc.. are still salvageable. That leaves three border crossings...the one into the new state, Nevada, and Arizona. Also the US wouldn't have to change the flag for the fact there would still be 50 states. It would work.

California really is three states. The old Russian Territory (known for wine and marijuana production), which is the Russian River and north along the coast. The old Spanish Territory (which will fall in the ocean eventually), which is Santa Rosa and South along the coast. That leaves central and eastern California, which is more like a Midwestern farming state, than it is like the rest of the state.

I'm a liberal-minded fiscal conservative who studied at a California university for in-state tuition, and am vehemently against this bill.

Still, after having lived in 7 countries (Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, India) and having visited 32 countries total before moving to Southern Florida and finally to Southern California, I would not want to live anywhere else, not even for a guaranteed $1,000,000.00 annual income, with the single exception of Monaco.

No doubt there are things wrong in California, like about anywhere else, but sometime one has to choose between the lesser evil and the devil in carne, in California's case Meg Whitman, and try to actively work on better solutions. Given the choice of allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition and being bend over a chair and raped in the you know what, every single day, I know what to choose.

It's like complaining about $4-a-gallon gas, when the Europeans pay $8 to $9 for the same juice. Would I like to pay less? Sure. Will $4 per gallon kill me? Nope.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

While parts of your post I could agree with, your underlying tone of hostility and xenophobia is irritating. Especially your oxymoron 'unemployed taxpayers'! The illegals working are usually paying taxes. They have taxes with-held and have no hope of ever getting back any benefits from their social security contributions using their fake numbers! It is certainly ironic that this person would seek a career in criminal justice. I guess being a crooked cop can start at any point in the whole process!

Help me please...I'm slow. What part of these two words: "Illegal Alien" means that someone has broken the laws of the United States of America ?

Enticement to lure people into slavery. seems that the lilly white public unions in Wisconsin need collective bargaining, but brown lettuce pickers do not need minimum wage, benefits, or safe work places. I wonder how many illegals are working public union jobs in Wisconsin...oh yeah, NONE!

Does anyone else see the blatant racism in this? We conscript slaves and do not even pay for their transport here.

Liberals are too far gone to "get it". They have always lived in Namby-Pamby land and always will. There are no illegal aliens in America...only immigrants. And if you don't buy into their liberal snake oil you are "hostile and xenophobic".

If it was only in California it wouldn't be so bad, but California isn't the only state infested with fruits, nuts, and flakes. It seems that the USA is turning into the granola country.

People of my father and grandfather's generation weren't as "educated" as the current crop today, but they weren't even an eighth as stupid as what I see today. It boggles the mind to see the direction this country is heading.

Not a problem, I'll help ya.

The term illegal alien does not exist in the law. It's a creation of the language of the street, a bit derogatory, but so are other terms. #### that.

Being present in the US without authorization is a civil infraction, like you not feeding the parking meter. Imagine somebody grabbed you by the hair, threw you down on the ground and then revoked your driver's license for that!

Hence, as long as the legislator doesn't make illegal presence at least a misdemeanor, we can't really complain that much, can we?

Before we now make Obama the bad guy, remember that not one President nor Congress since 1776 has found it worth their time to go that route.

So even though we are both posting on a Visa Site, your telling me that a foreigner entering into this country without a visa is not Illegal ?

So all those people running across the border at night are not breaking any laws of the United States of America ?

#######...I paid all this $$$ and did all this visa work for nothing. Why I should have flown my wife into Mexico and had her run across the border. Just think of the time and $$$ we would have saved.

Do you support people being paid less than minimum wage? What about working without overtime? Safety equipment? Do you support the family and medical leave act? ADA? EEOA? OSHA?

Do you think employers should be able to avoid these things and exploit humans for $$$ ???
