Hi Piglett,

I had my BSN from the Philippines too and had been a registered nurse since 2002 here in CA. CA does not require foreign graduate nurses to take the CGFNS before one can take the NCLEX-RN. If I were you why don't you just have her take the NCLEX-RN from CA and when she gets her RN license here in CA just have it endorse to your state thru licensure through endorsement. It will not only save you $$$$ but will also save you the "pressure" of taking more tests. Also, CA does not require her to have a RN license from PI(it's not a pre-requisite). Hope this info helps.

As well, to ensure thew accuracy of the info you get from the web, contact that States Board of Nursing (BON) to ensure the accuracy of it. Best of luck

i just came from the BON in my state last week

they are the ones that want my wife to do the CGFNS

the lady i talked to at the BON said she didn't see any real problem & that she deals with pinay nurses all of the time.

my wife has her email & the 2 of them are incontact

my wife wasn't sure that she should still take the national nursing exam in the PI in July still

but due to the fact that she already got a 74% score last time & that she has pleany of time to study (3 months)

i can't come up with any good reason why she shouldn't take that test & then she never has to take it again

she felt really bad last time when she got the results

but i told her when you fall off of a horse you have to get rite back on

i know she will feel sooooo good once she proves to herself that she can pass that dam hard test :dance::dance:

Also i don't think my wife will ever work in the Pi as a nurse again once she arrives here

however in 20 years when her & i spend our winters in the province she mite enjoy working a couple of days a week

(maybe just to get away from me )he he he :bonk::bonk::bonk:

so if she is a RN there she should be in good shape even though i know the pay there is low.

do either of you work 12 hour shifts?

my wife doesn't yet drive so i'll have to take her to & from work due to the fact that where we will live has no public transpotation.

i think i heard that some nurses work 3 or 4 12 hour shifts & then have the rest of the week off

is this true???

if so that would be great, i could take her to work put in an 8 or 10 hour day myself & then pick her up.

however if she works five shifts a week 8 hours a day i don't know how i can be in two places at once.

thanks all

piglett

Shifts very from floor to floor. At mine majority do work 12 hr shifts, a very few do 8 hr shifts! And to throw a wrench into it, can depend if on eis full time, part or PRN (Casual)

When I was full time I had to work 3--12 hr shifts a week! Some do 3 in a row, some stagger them! In some hospitals one has no say, they schedule the shifts for you, but in mine we have self-scheduling, so you can pick your own shifts for the most part---Management has the final say of course so can move you around!

I have been PRN since August and love that! More $$$$--no benefits, lol So if one doesn't need any insurance (covered under ur spouse) PRN is a cool way to go. I'm only obligated to work 6 shifts in 2 months! So I sign up for the minimum, KNOWING my unit is always short, thus they will be calling and offering incentive pay!! 1.5 x to double time! So makes no sense to sign up for more days on my own! Again each hospital differs

I know many work two jobs! Full time at 1, then PRN at another.

12 hr shifts can be a killer, especially nights--as ones body never really adjusts! Extra differential pay for working evenings, nights and weekends as well

And some hospitals have what we call as weekend alternative--they only work Friday and Saturday--ttl of 24 hrs, BUT get paid for 32 hrs and get full time benefits! Just sucks that you work weekends all the time! But great if you want to pick up a second job.

Again it all varies from hospital to hospital.

allnurses.com has a students section that has a NCLEX forum that can be very helpful! Its just a matter of studying--and doing piles of questions! Some say 1 should do around 5000 NCLEX style questions before they write the exam!! I did the KAPLAN course and thought it was very good. The book they give u covers everything so its a great resource! Can't buy that book at stores, but you can find it on EBAY from time to time and cheap, like $15! Their question bank is awesome! Classroom component was only so-so. Just takes patience!! many people fail it multiple times!! Its a hard exam. Many smart ones fail it, lot of morons pass it,lol

Good luck

First off AllNurses is very racist toward anyone from Philippines trying to ask questions in the International Section.

When Suzanne was the Mod there, she kept things under control. Now the only mod that is on theb board is SilverDragon and she is from England and couldn't get a work visa to USA so now she works in Canada and is extremely jealous of any Philipines Nurses getting to work in the USA

I spent many years on that board, and I got tired off the racist behavior allowed on All Nurses

CGNFS also does Transcript evalution.

But I assume you live in one of the few states that still require a International Nurse to pass a CGNFS, I have talked to a few Pinay nurses and they say it's tougher than the NCLEX.

I would have your wife apply in another state where they don't require CGNFS (many don't) and a state that doesn't require her to have a local license in PI. Local Licenses exams are given like 2 times per year, and it takes about 3 months to get the test result. So I really see no reason for her to taking or passing the local exam in PI. Have her study for NCLEX, get her Saunders study guide for NCLEX and once she arrives in USA and gets her Authorization to Test for NCLEX send her to Kaplan for a 1 week study session for NCLEX.

She will never work as nurse in PI, You make more working at a mall as a sales girl. Way way too many nurses who can't find work, they only make about $4 per day (8 hour shift), and most have to work for 6 months for free at a hospital to get experience before they ever can get hired as a RN in PI.

Piglett.

My wife arrived in USA at age 20 with on a BSN. She never took her local exam in PI, nor has she ever worked a day in her life. I sent her Saunders in Philippines to read while she was still in school, once she had been in USA after about 3 months I sent her to Kaplan for a week and she did the study bank question which you get when you go to the 1 week school for NCLEX. She said the test bank questions were very helpful, the classroom was not too much.

I live in Texas, My wife took NCLEX she answered the test stopped at 75 question, she passed it took her about 1 hour for the test, and in USA you can take the NCLEX exam 6 days per week and and each and every week and it computer test you take. Less than 3 weeks after passing her NCLEX my wife had 2 job offers to be a RN.

She took the job that would help her most, and she went thru a 2 month training / orenitation period where they paid her full salary for it. After that she started working in Progressive Care unit and she worked 12 hours shifts. At her hospital you only needed to work (3) 12 hours shifts per week to be full time and get benifits (Insurance, etc). Plus if they work on the weekend they get like $9 per hour shift Differntial for working weekend, or working night they get like $4 per hours.

My wife never had to work night shifts and she was allowed to work up to (5) 12 hours shifts per week with out managers approval, but remember she has to work at least 3 per week, and she does what they call self schedule it where you set your own schedule.

Suggestion.

In 20 years you will be 60 and your wife will be around 45. I suggest you get yourself to PI at around age 50 and retire over there.

Many Phlippines nurses work 2 full time jobs as RN, they bank all the money they can. Have her work 1 job full time, and have her do PRN as nurse at another hospital or hospitals they pay about 1.5 times the amount a full time nurse makes because they have no benfits (Insurance, PTO, etc.)

You and her work hard for 10 years and ya'll go to PI and you live your life out sitting on a beach living like a King in Philippine. You can hire full time live in helpers in Philippines and pay them $40 per month plus food. All you do is you and your wife have fun and let the helper cook, clean, shop, etc.

You can buy a nice house in Philipines for aorund $20,000, cost of living is so so cheap, and the people are very friendly and the food is awesome

Lots and lots of jobs in Dallas Fort. Worth area for RN's, so if you want a change of pace and like warm weather come to Texas..
