I assume that your wife finished school long before I did :)

I finished school in 2006... and for me those classes were not just high school, but started at some point during middle school period (and nowadays kids start it in elementary school, but they don't study military stuff that early of course).

Now the classes are more medical oriented for girls and more military oriented for guys. Of course gils learn some basic military things too, but shooting is not one of them :(

My wife's daughter finished school in 2006.....

Also as I am sure most of you know, around the 8th grade or so the government made decisions as to what your career and education would be. They told Alla she was going to be a teacher of the Russian language and concentrated her education on language and literature until she graduated college. She had very little math and science education in high school and college, which was fine with her. They actually chose what a persons education to that point revealed they did well at and focused on that.

My wife was a teacher of Russian language and literature.

That's someting I didn't even know :)

My mom studied in Russia, my dad studied in Ukraine, neither of them had this problem.

Yes, and Alla did not consider it a problem. She loved language and literature and still does and loved the idea of being a teacher, and still does. Plus it got her out of the science and math classes she hated.

She actually worked a couple years as a teacher before perestroika but after that found better (higher paying) use for her language skills.

They had the same job. Alla's MA is in Russian Language and Literature. After perestroika Alla got jobs in private business using her language skills that proved much higher paying, such as editor of a medical journal. She was working as a translator/interpreter for international business when I met her. Paid very well and she got to travel on their dime which is her other passion.

you see your classmates wearing that: http://pics.livejournal.com/milind/pic/001pb1gk/s640x480 I honestly don't even know what you call it in English.

Chem suit is the common name. Chemical protective ensemble or something like that would be the official name.

The Russian suits are typically more rubberized and waterproof with maybe a cloth suit underneath. American suits are cloth and contain charcoal to filter out any contaminants. Both equally suck although the Russian suits are good in the rain (although you're so sweaty your soaked anyway) and American suits outstanding for hunting deer.

In previous nuclear crises, suits such as those were handed out to make folks feel better.

I've decided to hide the few guns I do have.

Alla still loves to shoot, but mostly .22's and skeet. She expects me to let her win at skeet. She expects me to let her win at everything. She also likes to "fight" (wrestle) and after giving her a fair fight I have to let her win.

That's good.

I just thought it would've been a huge problem for me, if i had had to experience the same.

A lot of that hunting gear is designed to "catch" hunters, not deer. The whole "cover my scent" thing to hunt an animal that lives in the suburbs and eats from people's bird feeders and flower beds is pretty silly.

when I was young we used to take bales of feed out to the cattle in the pasture. My brother and I would ride in the back and toss the stuff out. My dad would honk the horn to call the cattle and guess who else came? Deer. I used to hunt deer for two months every year and we were allowed to kill 5 each year. Between my brothers, my dad and my grandfather we had a lot of venison. We never used any of that stuff to cover our scent.

I also hunted deer in the Bob Marshall wilderness in Montana. It is quite liely any deer there have never seen a human and when they would see us they would stop and stare as if to try and figure out what kind of animal we were. Often to their detrement.

I use that deer scent and rabbit scent all the time when training dogs to track. It offers a great chance to set them up during training to encounter a deer trail or a rabbit track.

Especially if he's a bow hunter. As Gary's pointed out deer aren't exactly difficult to kill but the guys who get up in the trees to bow hunt often try to mask their scent becauuse to shoot a deer with a bow the deer has to get really close to the tree. If it smells a human, it may not come close enough.

I never hunted with a bow. The deer at my mom's house come up and kick the picture window to tell her to fill the feeder and will eat from the bucket if you hold it. I think they can smell me and I could kill them with a knife, but my mom would probably object to me knifing the deer in her front yard.

And nobody wants to send Mom into a tizzy.

Wish I was Home so I could ask Mila about this thread's topic. Sigh...

So would the game warden.

The reason many folks hunt deer with a bow is because in many parts of the country shotgun (yes, you can only use a shotgun, not a rifle or any other "proper" hunting tool) is the only acceptable killing tool for a few days. If you're lucky you'll get a second season that'll double your chances of harvesting more deer but for the most part, the bow is the only way to go when stretching the season out over a more manageable schedule.

Then there's the whole "sporting" aspect of it as well. I'll never in a million years claim that sitting in a tree and ambushing a deer with a shotgun from 40 yards away is "sporting." (Nor is hitting it with a rifle from 100+ yards...) However, using a bow is a little closer to the more primitive aspect of hunting game and as far as I can tell, it counts as "sporting."

Forgot to add - Gary if you've never bow hunted you may want to give it a go. At least do some target shooting. It can be quite challenging and very, very fun!

Also a lot of state parks require bow hunting. When I worked at Fall Creek Falls State Park, bow hunting is what was allowed. No guns. The hunting was pretty regulated, but it was allowed and not restricted during the season. They had areas they would allow it in and areas they wouldn't (like clearly you wouldn't set up over a trail lol). But basically, hikers could come into contact with hunters-- it's not like they put tape around hundreds of acres to keep people out. Bow hunting was basically to keep the chances of accidental injury, etc to a minimum. Most of the hunters were locals and park workers who were stocking up their freezers for the year.

So would the game warden.
