Hey so my Green Card Came today super fast. But I still haven't received my SS card yet. When I went to the SS office they told me it will come from immigration. Is it normal for the GC to come before the SS? Is there a way I can get it with out waiting?

10/10/09: Married in Hamilton, Ontario :)

04/01/2010 : I-130 Sent

04/16/10 : NOA1 Issued (Hard Copy)

09/02/2010: File Touched Fingers Crossed

09/24/2010: NOA2 Approval!!!

My green card came before my SSN as well back in 2005. Simply went to the SSN office and inquired about it--nope wasn there--so I had to re-apply for the SSN at the office. Week later it arrived in the mail. Can download the SSN form at http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/ take ur Greencard//passport//birth cert for ID purposes. 1 should wait 10-14 BUSINESS days from POE, before going to SSN office and checking (gives them time to get ur info into the system)

Happens to many that check off the box on the DS-230--SSN never arrives, and you have to apply in person

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

MORE THAN LIKELY>>> you will NOT get a social security card in the mail.. so welcome to the USA.. and you should go and join the line at the Social Security Local office and apply for it. The good thing is .. it will be much quicker for you to receive it since your immigration status can verified via the green card.

Oh so you ticked the box to get one on the visa application ? Nah you wont get it you have to go and apply for one at the local SSO and take GC and marriage cert and you should receive in a week. You could have applied for a SSN when you first came here 2-3 weeks after arrival.

Divorced !st November 2012.

Married only 2 years 1 month

You could have applied for a SSN the same day here 2-3 weeks after arrival.

this can be done the same day the person arrives in the USA. The process maybe slowed because the immigrant has to be entered into the SAVE system.

Easiest way, go to the SS office and apply there!

Check cashed: March 10, 2011

NOA1: March 8, 2011

Biometrics Appt: April 21, 2011

Approved: September 7, 2011
