Personally have never used, as far as I know it varries from country to country.

Also depends on state to state as well, some state accept it some don't - for example I think NJ accepts Indian drivers lic and all you have to take is the theaory test and no practical.

I dont think same works in Texas, so you might want to check with your local DMV office if they would accept it or not.

Why would it be so difficult to just apply for the US drivers lic without your home country drivers lic?

It would not be a problem. However they require you do a little less or a little more if you have a drivers license. For instance, If you have your out of country DL you would not have to get a permit and go to Driving school in MD. Without the license it is like starting off as a beginner driver.

I am little confused from your statement.

2 parts for the Drivers Lic:

1 - Theory

2 - Practical

Only thing I have heard is if you have drivers lic from country which is on your local DMVs list then you can just be done with part 1 and you will be able to skip practical.

I could be wrong, but I dont think you have to go to driving school, you can do a theory test and get a learning permit and even your spouse can teach you how to drive.

If you look at the section for exchanging out-of-country lic for MD.

First line state your need to pass all 3 vision, knowledge(theory) and driving test(practical)so I am not sure what good is foregin drivers lic is doing or how is it adding any value.

Thanks. If he does not have the license to show proof he would have to get a learners permit regardless of his age, which would require more than listed above. If he has the out of country license then that would prevent from getting a permit and taking all the required courses etc involved with that process. My concern is, My fiance license is old and has not been renewed in a while so I was wondering if anyone had any problems with having an old license when applying here in US. It was not suspended but it was not revewed for over a year or so.

If it is old and had not been renewed over a year, byt the time he comes to US it will be expired for more than 12 - 18 months don't even bother to show he has a drivers lic from other country.

Just apply as he is a new driver, here is how it works, he studies for the theory test most DMV provide the books for free.

Take the theory test I belive its like 20-25 bucks for it, once he passes that they take the vision screening some offices do before some after the test not a big deal.

Then he start practicing on car and afgter 30 days of the theory test he can apply for the drivers permit which is like 15 bucks and thats it.
