My parents are meeting her parents in Dublin, Ireland!

My parents travel to Ireland for about a month every year (they both have dual citizenship). Anyhow, Jinky has 2 older sisters that work as RN's in Dublin. For the first time in their lives, her parents are going to visit the sisters in early October, and my parents will be making a stop in Dublin. So we've made arrangements for my Mom and Dad to meet Jinky's parents in Ireland! It's really great because my father is closely approaching 79, and I don't know how much longer he'll feel up to travelling. Also, my Mom cannot handle hot weather so it's unlikely they would ever be able to travel to the Philippines to meet her family. It's also good because up until a few days ago, I didn't even tell my parents we were engaged. They have a hard time understanding how anyone can have a real relationship that is long distance. They're also had bought into a lot of the stereotypes - Third World women looking for greencards. We've gotten past the hurt feelings and misunderstandings and I'm hoping that once they meet Jinky's sisters and parents, they will have a better sense of what kind of person Jinky is. :star::yes:

That's great news! And congrats on telling your folks you're engaged. Are they fluent in English? edit: I mean, JINKY'S folks, not yours :)

Thanks, Alex. Jinky's Dad is more brave about speaking in English while Mom is shy, but with my Dad's hard hearing, it's going to be an interesting meeting. :P Her sisters speak perfect English though and both have Irish fiance's. One of them has been gracious about planning the meeting so hopefully there won't be too many moments of uncomfortable silence. :star:

Thanks. We actually had a falling out for a couple months after they found out I flew to meet Jinky. My parents had the audacity to type out seperate letters expressing their concerns. In my Dad's letter to me, he said something of the sort that I should focus on my children and forget about the Philippines. I was pissed to say the least. But that's all water under the bridge and all is forgiven. I can't change the way my parents are but I think they have a new found respect for me as being my own person - a mature adult who can make decisions for himself.:star:

Steven, not trying to sound pssimistic, but is there any way you can go too? It could be an awkward situation, and if you were there, you could ensure it runs as smoothly as poss.

Good luck!

Oh, there's no way I can go. In spite of my Dad's bad hearing, he loves conversation and won't hesitate to say something just to get the ball rolling. I imagine that my parents will probably talk mostly to Jinky's sister and her fiance, while her parents listen on. They're only going to meet for tea, so it won't be a long drawn out event. :star:
