Hello everyone. We are still waiting for an interview date. I was accepted into graduate school next month but my fiance thinks I should wait until after she gets the Pink slip. I don't want to lose a $2000 scholarship because she wants me to do it later. She becomes more and more worried about every little thing as time go on. I personelly do not think going back to school is a red flag but she thinks it will make her interview more difficult.

We don't have any divorces or meetings through relatives so our case should not have very many red flags. If I go to school before my fiance does her interview considered a bad thing? How do I convince my fiance that it is ok because this school issue is really making her paranoid :(

Why would it consider a bad thing? I would consider that it is a good thing because you are getting a higher education to prepare for your future. Are you are going to keep your date time job? If not, this may be a problem because they need affidavit of support.

Hello,

Yes I will continue to work at my job. I would like to change jobs but I think it is better to stay with my current job because it is very flexible with my schedule and I could get a bonus very soon...if I do good work :)

I understand your points. I also think it is a good thing. My fiance worries because she thinks it will be another reason the Consulate can use to deny our visa. She thinks why should we give them more reasons to try and deny the visa.

Are you 100% sure it will be ok if I do school?

People over there believe every single thing they hear about the process and it's truly annoying! They freak out about every little things, and now I'm going to add going back to school to the list.

Put your foot down and set her straight. If she wants to live a comfortable life then your furthering your education will allow for that. Also the Consulate will not know about you going back to school unless you tell them, and in either case it does not matter if you meet the minimum wage requirements. Tell her to stop listening to other people because each case is different, and stress that she needs to calm down quickly because at the interveiw if she acts like she is now that it will probably lead to at least a blue slip. Confidence is the key, the other keys are knowing one another and having proof that your realationship is real. Going back to school clearly shows your head is on your shoulders, and even if the CO knew he would probably think it was a good thing. Look at the economy, you need every edge you have for the job market. Just put your foot down and tell her like it is. Explain the benefits and that there are NO negatives to this, especially if your current job schedule will work around your schooling meaning you are still working full time and going to school. Tell her how it will actually help and not hurt like she is fearing. Jerome

Is she worrying that if she might not get the pink slip and once you get too busy with the schooling, you won't be able to chit-chat with her as often as she wants to, or worse, you won't be able to fly over to visit her?

I can't help you deciding what's right or wrong with your life. But if I were in your shoes, I'd ask my this "If I pass either of them, which will give another chance in the future, and which will NOT."

She already gives you a choice at this early stage of the marriage. Be prepared to make choices, difficult ones, some time later in your marriage with her.

Edit to add: having watched Suzie Orman on PBS recently, there was that one dude practically crying on her TV show because he was in so much debt ($100 grand or so) after obtaining his Master. Yet he was getting only $20k annually from his job. He's not so sure by going back to graduate school and having that piece of paper in hands would be beneficial to his family.

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

Thank you everybody. I really think this should not be such a big deal. I already spoke to her parents and they agree to help talk with her to make her understand this is for our future. Thanks so much.
