i wish i could ask this in the Bahamian portal, but alas, here we go..

My husband is a US greencard holder from Jamaica. He has a 3 yr old daughter that was born in the Bahamas but does not have a visa, however she does have a Bahamian travel document. I understand Bahamian nationals are allowed entry in the US without a visa if they pass a preclearance procedure.. I would like to know for a minor child to be eligible for clearance, does the parent have to be a Bahamian national as well?? What exactly will be the requirements?

Based on this info, I think she would be eligible to travel - just get a letter from the mother giving him permission to take her for a visit, and buy a RT ticket - You could email the embassy there and ask

Hi,

I am familiar with Bahamian documents and I suspect this child needs a visa. Merely being born in the Bahamas does not automatically make someone Bahamian as it depends on the citizenship and marital status of the parents. Your use of the term "Bahamian travel document" seems to indicate the child has something other than the normal Bahamian passport. If the child has a Bahamian Certificate of Identity, then the child isn't Bahamian or has not established to the Bahamian government that he/she qualifies as a Bahamian citizen.

The Certificate of Identity looks like a passport, but isn't equivalent under US immigration laws. Check the document to see if it says Certificate of Identity on the cover and/or the document number begins with "ET". If it does then a visa is required. Another telltale sign is the biographic page of the document and what is listed as nationality. The certificate of identity may say "Jamaican" on it under nationality.

Check out the document and let us know.
