Has anyone recently imported a car from Mexico and registered at the DMV.

What was required at Border crossing and at DMV?

  • AOS Status
  • 03-10-11 Day 00 = AOS FedEx overnight
  • 03-11-11 Day 01 = AOS at Chicago Lockbox FedEx Confirmation
  • 04-11-11 Day 32 = AOS Text/eMail Confirmation
  • 04-14-11 Day 35 = NOA (EAD & AOS)
  • 04-15-11 Day 36 = Bio-Metrics NOA
  • 05-10-11 Day 61 = Bio-Metrics Appointment
  • 05-17-11 Day 68 = Submitted Request to Correct Name on 485 & 765
  • 05-23-11 Day 74 = Status online shows I-765 (EAD) Approved
  • 06-02-11 Day 84 = EAD arrived in the mail
  • 06-02-11 Day 84 = Went to SSA office (name wrong on Master Immigration List)
  • 06-12-11 Day 95 = InfoPass to correct name
  • 06-12-11 Day 95 = SSA office again Pending name update
  • 06-??-11 Day ?? = Received Social Security Card
  • 08-03-11 Day 146 = AOS Interview

I looked into it briefly when we were considering buying a car in Mexico and was told that most cars sold in Mexico do not meet US safety standards. We decided to wait until we cross the border before buying one. (My fiancé and I live together in Mexico.) I would be curious to know if the advice that we got was true.

09/25/2010 - I-129 Sent

K-1 VISA JOURNEY

10/06/2010 - NOA 1

03/07/2011 - NOA 2

03/21/2011 - NVC sent to Juárez

03/18/2011 - Juárez received

(How Juarez received before NVC sent is beyond me. I'm just reporting what I've been told.)

04/11/2011 - Juárez sent Packet 3

04/25/2011 - "Packet 3" arrived to my fiancé's house in Mexico

05/02/2011 - Medical

05/03/2011 - ASC

05/04/2011 - Interview

05/11/2011 - Entered the United States of America for the first time in his life

05/16/2011 - MARRIED!

My husband already has a car (ford truck) in mexico, and so we were just thinking of brining it here instead of buying another one (used).

Wanted to know what needed to be done before reaching the border!

Im not sure if this is true but we were going to buy a car for my husband while he is in Mexico and bring it back with us when he receives his visa. I asked a Border Patrol agent about it and he told me that he would have no problem bringing it over the border. He lives in Mexicali and there are many cars in Mexico that have US titles and plates. Those are fine to bring over and will have no problem registering and insuring them. But the vehicles with Mexico titles and plates cant be registered in the US. Once again, I dont know if this is true. We just decided against getting him a car but your best bet would to be call your local Department of Motor Vehicles and get specifics from them.
