I personally don't like to use the Metro because I think it's too dangerous. That's why I refuse to take a job in DC/Silver Spring/Rockville/Bethesda...basically anywhere that would pretty much require taking the Metro.

I've been there so many times. I've never felt unsafe. Why do you think it's dangerous?

Yes PARTS of DC and Baltimore are dangerous - but that's the same in ANY city - if you're on the metro in the suburbs...I can't imagine EVER feeling unsafe. I lived in Dc For three months - in the city....and never EVER felt unsafe...

This IS coming from a girl who lived in Harlem and never worried for a second...

I'm not saying I'm scared of being in DC or Baltimore. Not a whole lot of things like that scare me. But being in an enclosed space with some real characters did scare me for real. Only one time have I ever feared for my life and that was once when we got lost in Baltimore. It got real interesting there for a little while.

Ok.

Harlem isn't dangerous like it used to be.

yes, but, tell someone you live there....they freak out, "OMG were you ever scared?"

It's NOT scary...that's my point...neither is riding the metro in dc.

you think the metro is dangerous??? it's like - the cleanest safest in the country!!

Maybe NYC just made me realyl biased?

You ever take the subway in Hong Kong or Singapore? They make the US subways look like toilets.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I agree. I've ridden the metro in DC a lot and never been scared. But then again, I don't stay away from NYC out of fear of being mugged/killed, either, so that's just me. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. If staying away works for you and makes you happy, more power to you.

Even the subway in Calcutta (the filthiest city I've ever been in!) is sparkling clean compared to NYC.

That's one reason I wouldn't want to live in any big city. Baltimore made #6 on that list for a reason. I rather not be a chalk outline, so I go there as little as possible.

Well, there are shootings and stabbings just blocks from my office in Cincinnati each and every night. Cincinnati is a pretty rough city. There are very safe and decent burbs around here, though. That's where we live. And I intent to do the same in any other city. Inner cities in the US usually suck big time.

As for that list: It has Atlanta as more dangerous than Cincinnati and Cleveland. I'd choose Atlanta (not downtown  ) over either OH cities any day.
