Alright. So, there's an opportunity in Baltimore that I am being considered for. It's a longer story how it came my way but the bottom line is that I will be talking to this firm over the course of this week. Not sure if I'll make the cut but if I do, I'd like to know whether or not Baltimore would be a place where Nani and I would like to be. She has family in the area, so that's a plus.

Now, I know that the cost of living is about 20% higher in Baltimore than in Cincinnati. I am, however, looking at increasing my salary quite a bit - more than offsetting that difference. Now, where would one want to live in the Baltimore area? Is there a halfway decent public transport system available? How's the average commute? How are the people around there? Those kind of things I'd like to know from anyone familiar with the area.

I don't have much to offer, but good luck anyways.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

I live in the suburbs of DC, but I actually spend more time in Baltimore.

I personally love Baltimore-there's a lot to do, there's the Inner Harbor...there are some bad areas. It's also kind of confusing for driving. A bit more confusing than most cities I've driven in. Let me put it to you like this: for the money it would cost, I wouldn't live there. I would suggest moving to a suburb of Baltimore. There are all different places to live up and down the BW Parkway. Basically, you take the Parkway straight up into Baltimore. The closest county I can think of is Anne Arundel County. That is a great place to live. A bit more expensive than I can afford, but the school system is excellent. You will also be in a very central location for accessing Baltimore and DC, plenty of shopping and all that good stuff...if you want more details, let me know. I'm really good at searching for stuff.

I would say you don't want to live in Baltimore City. If you are going to be working in Baltimore City any of the surrounding counties have nice places to live. Howard County would be my first choice, Elkridge, Ellicott City or Columbia areas are nice if you have the bucks. If you don't mind a little drive Carroll County is nice. After that I would look at Harford, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties in that order.

Rush hour traffic going into and out of Baltimore City can be bad, but nowhere as bad as around DC.

Baltimore is AMAZING. I LOVE IT. Now I'm a crab-loving, water obsessed girl - so maybe it's more my style than others.

inner harbor is amazing...

i have to say my time i spent there was in my mid 20's when i was into the social scene so that may bias my thinking??

But I give it two thumbs up!

Also it is so close to DC and I love DC too! There is so much to do in BOTH those cities!! I have never been to Cincy but I LOVE Baltimore...

<ok i'm done :)>

it goes into parts of Baltimore...I've ridden the metro in from BWI before.

In DC the last ones leave at 11 pm or so....but with a child on the way - i doubt they'll be out partying too hard :)

agent smith - true.

BUT if you live in the burbs, you can use the metro to go into the city and avoid the traffic....

Right. The DC metro is nice but it stops running too darn early if I recall correctly.

Does Baltimore have a metro too?

There is a light rail line that runs through Baltimore City and parts of Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties, but is nothing like the DC Metro that has 5 or 6 lines running through DC, VA and MD.

Baltimore, nice place to visit, bad place to live.

That's an Amtrak line that runs to BWI.

I assume you hooked up at Union Station in DC or New Carrolton in MD.

hmm I don't remember.

If you live there I can understand your feelings.

I used to live in NYC - everyone was like, "HOW COULD YOU LEAVE?" and I say the SAME thing -nice place to visit - hated living there :)

I will now keep my advice only to places I have actually lived!

I wouldn't want to live in any big city, but I have lived here my whole life and I say come in see an Oriole game or look at the Inner Harbor and then get out of town.

I personally don't like to use the Metro because I think it's too dangerous. That's why I refuse to take a job in DC/Silver Spring/Rockville/Bethesda...basically anywhere that would pretty much require taking the Metro. Baltimore is another story. I could definitely see working there if you live somewhere off the Parkway (I'm thinking Columbia, Pasadena, Glen Burnie, etc). Those are all in Anne Arundel County. From let's say Glen Burnie it's about 8 miles up the Parkway until you're in Baltimore. You drive right into Baltimore. Glen Burnie is a nice place to live. You have Arundel Mills mall with a Medieval Times, plus Baltimore right up the road. You will be within minutes of BWI airport. I can also recommend a great Mexican restaurant where some of Javier's relatives work!
