So I moved here July last year, got married in October 2010.

Since I moved here, I think I have had a cold / flu just about once every month in average.

I did get often sick in Norway too, but when I get sick over here, it's been way worse. We are talking fever, body aches, headaches, runny nose, very sore throat (had to take penicillin, and went to the doctor at one point).

Anyone else experience this?

I don't have allergies, so that can not be why.

Also, I don't work, and don't even have a license, so I don't even get to go out and meet people that much during the mid day hours, so less likely to catch something.

I would think that moving from cold Norway, to the high temperatures in Texas, would result in LESS sickness.

I am sick of feeling sick! :/

Is this something that happens to a lot of people when they move?

It's possible to develop allergies at any age. Have you been checked for allergies since you moved here?

It's a wives tale that cold temperatures result in getting colds. In fact, warmer climates may have more germs around - as the cold isn't there to kill them.

Consider getting a flu shot next year - a flu shot will result in 1/3 less colds and lessen cold symptoms - even though flu and common cold are unrelated (current mystery of science).

You are probably being exposed to germs that you haven't before - hopefully soon you'll develop immunity. Good luck.

im from the uk and whenever i go to texas i get ill too, i catch some virus or bug within a few weeks of being there and i also dont go out anywhere much when im there.

In Texas there's a good chance that it's allergies.

In the Austin area it would be called Cedar fever, Excellent chance you have allergies. Google "allery forecast and your zip code" it will tell what is floating around in the air. It changes at different times of year.

Mountain Cedar is from the devil.

Here's where I check the allergy forecast. Pollen

Allergies do not cause fever. If you have a fever it is not allergies.

Texas is a bad place for allergy sufferers.

Yes. I moved the Houston Texas when I first arrived and I got REALLY sick. I figured it was because of the air conditioning in the house (or so I was told) the constant dry air didn't help. Also I wonder what's in the vents that's blowing out.. all the dust and bugs and mouse poo or who knows what else.

The pollen in houston was insane so allergies were ridiculous. Not to mention the humidity. Also there are different "bugs" (that cause colds) in different countries and you haven't been building immunities your whole life like you have in your home country so it will take a little while to get better. I've been here since Sept 2009 and I feel better.. could also be that I'm not in Texas anymore :P

Your symptoms don't sound like allergies. You are probably exposed to all kinds of new bugs since your move. Kind of like kids get sick a lot once they first start preschool or kindergarten.

I got sick a lot too first, moving from Germany to Louisiana and I noticed it was worse when we had a/c on really cold (hubby likes to live in an icebox as it seems). You come inside from the heat, maybe have caught a bug already and voila, you are down with the nicest cold imaginable. (I know you can't get sick from being cold but a bug+going inside a cold building when you are sweating will sure do it)

In my case, it got better after the first year and I hope, it will get better for you as well.

Kanskje et dumt spørsmål, men har du hatt influensavaksinen? Mange stedet gir den ut gratis her i USA, spesielt i influensasesongen.

Jeg flytta fra Oslo til Pennsylvania og har ikke hatt noen problemer med ekstra sykdom.

Married since 03/02/2011, AOS from F-1 visa, green card granted 05/24/2011.
Blessed with a healthy baby boy, 08/19/2011! We get to keep our family together! Thank you! smile.png

I know when I started teaching kindergarten that first year I was exposed to all kinds of viruses and germs and I was sick the entire year until my body got used to it. Your body probably just needs to build up antibodies to the area and the germs where you are. I must say I'm also fearful of this for my husband but hopefully it won't be too bad...i'm expecting it though. Just make sure your eating and drinking plenty of water. The more your body is worn down the easier it is for the next virus to make you sick. Eventually you won't feel so bad so often. My second year teaching was farrrr better hardly out at all ;) hopefully the same will happen to you! Good luck!
