illusion of superiority

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to appreciate their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to the situation in which less competent people rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence. Competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. As Kruger and Dunning (1999) conclude, "Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others" (p. 1127).

The effect is not specifically limited to the observation that ignorance of a topic is conducive to overconfident assertions about it, and Dunning and Kruger cite a study saying that 94% of college professors rank their work as "above average" (relative to their peers), to underscore that the highly intelligent and informed are hardly exempt. Rather, the effect is about paradoxical defects in perception of skill, in oneself and others, regardless of the particular skill and its intellectual demands, whether it is chess, playing golf or driving a car.

Very interesting. Socrates' statement of uncertainty, "I know that I know nothing," had a profound effect on me when I studied about him in High School. I never understood how some people could latch on to absolute truths about life with such egocentric certainty. The acknowledgment of uncertainty to me is liberating but for some, that causes a lot of anxiety. They seem to have an incessant need to see the world in absolutes.

It's what you choose to make it. And you've chosen to personalise. Once again.

No need to bait you, you do a pretty good job of baiting yourself, given that anything I post seems to be a red rag to your bull.

A man has got to know his limitations. People who say that the French Revolution had a profound effect on our constitution for example. People like that have never acknowledged that they know nothing and are filled with egocentric certainty. Why else would someone say something so profoundly ignorant?

Unfortunately, we don't see much Socratic dialog here in VJ or most internet forums...but it is nice when it does eventually happen

Philosopher/Theologian Thomas Aquinas also had a similar statement to Socrates in which he said, "“All that I have written seems to me like straw compared to what has now been revealed to me.” Pretty incredible stuff, considering his immense volume of writings!

Well that the beauty of message boards. Not only do you not have to watch or read what you can't be bothered to, but you can broadcast that you can't be bothered ;)

In view of comments made in other threads in this forum, I tend to agree that this is a bait thread and meant to be seen as a bait thread. As such I am closing it to further discussion and issuing an official warning to stop baiting either through posting threads like this or by references in other threads. I have also edited the title to just the main topic.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
