6 people shot by US rescuers

Its all a bit confusing because there were two rescues. One was rescued by that VTOL and the other by helicopter. Sounds like the VTOL was responding to the crewman where the shooting took place. Sounds like the shooting was by some sort of fighter as they are now reporting the landowner was hit by shrapnel.

Makes sense

CNN still silent

Here is the most in depth report I've seen. CBS updated it with more info just recently.

A high-ranking Navy officer tells CBS News Correspondent David Martin an investigation is underway into the rescue of one of two downed American crew members whose F-15 fighter crashed over Libya.

During a briefing Tuesday, Admiral Samuel Locklear, refused to address a British television report that several Libyan civilians were shot by the crew of a Marine Osprey aircraft during the rescue.

Locklear did say, "the recovery mission was executed as I would have expected it to be, given the circumstances."

Complete coverage: Anger in the Arab World

The two crew members safely ejected from the fighter jet, which the Pentagon said was on strike mission against government missile site.

One of the pilots parachuted into a rocky field and hid in a sheep pen on Hamid Moussa el-Amruni's family farm.

"We didn't think it was an American plane. We thought it was a Qaddafi plane. We started calling out to the pilot, but we only speak Arabic. We looked for him and found the parachute. A villager came who spoke English and he called out 'we are here, we are with the rebels' and then the man came out," Hamid Moussa el-Amruni said.

The pilot left in a car with the Benghazi national council, taking with him the water and juice the family provided. They kept his helmet and the parachute.

A second plane reportedly strafed the field where the pilot went down. Hamid Moussa el-Amruni himself said he was shot, suffered shrapnel wounds in his leg and back, but he could still walk. He used an old broomstick as a crutch and said he held no grudge, believing it was an accident.

He said the second crew member came down in a different field and was picked up by a helicopter, an account that coincided with the U.S. explanation of the rescue.

Other accounts differed as to injuries, however.

CBS's Mandy Clark arrived at the scene and spoke to an eyewitness, who said there was some firing but absolutely no one was injured.

"He said he would understand why there might be firing if the Americans were on the ground," Clark told CBS Radio News.

"He certainly didn't think the shooting was against civilians , perhaps more of a warning firing to tell people to back off and stay away from the wreckage and to stay away from the pilot and the weapons officer," Clark said.

Another witness told Clark that the Americans fired on their own plane that was down, perhaps in an effort to destroy it so none of the weaponry or technology could be seized by other forces.

Witnesses told Clark that right after the plane crashed, there were flares shot by other planes, which can sometimes serve as a a warning for civilians to stay away from an area. These villagers were not aware of that.

The crash was the first major loss for the U.S. and European military air campaign, which over three nights appears to have hobbled Gadhafi's air defenses and artillery and rescued the rebels from impending defeat.

It is not State-run. The BBC is financed by public money and has a charter that is periodically reviewed by government. The goverment has no day to day management of BBC news content.

That isn't too say there is no bias in the BBCs reporting, far from it. But it's not anywhere near what you see on US networks, unless of course we're talking about BBC America, which copies the news/commentary style of the US TV news channels.

Well duh the British do everything better.

BBC America is run differently to BBC UK. As I said.

BBC America is dumbed down with amateurish (blonde FOX) style presenters with wired cleavages or statutory whatevers learning the trade

I listen to BBC radio 4 on the net

After 4 years in the US I can see what is good and bad about the UK and the BBC has grown in my estimation while many other aspects of the UK have declined in my estimation

Still no mention on CNN of the shot resuers as at 11.50am pacific

Its a cover up for sure but they will have to break it soon ? surely ?

They need to realise that it is 2011 and they will just force people to go to Al Jazeera

Marines on the Osprey say no rounds were fired, they barely touched down and no one left the aircraft.

Sound like the fighters wingman then ?

Sounds like it. Maybe some sort of protocol regarding grounded damaged aircraft? Obviously it needs revisited given this incident.

The BBC might appear unbiased on the surface, but it's state run.

America's TV networks are privately owned, yet they behave like state-run propaganda machines.

This has really surprised me - all I can think is that there is a 'D - notice' system here which gags them

Good job we have the net

Even takes the Germans to publish photos of the skull and finger collecting soldiers

My mother in law says that no US service person has ever acted improperly in any conflict in any county ever - it is all lies and made up by enemies. She says the Abu Ghraib photos were faked and all the witnesses were lying for their own purposes

I don't think the US military are any worse than any other military and are a lot better than most - but they need to be open about incidents that have happened and are not in progress.

12.16 pacific and still no word on CNN

The US has a long standing policy of ensuring the complete destruction of any downed military craft whenever possible to prevent the craft or it's technology from being either used directly against the US and our allies or being reverse engineered and thereby used indirectly against us and our allies.

Didn't happen this time as there were relatively undamaged missiles etc laid all over the desert

However, the actual plane looked like my wife had been trying to park it

This is another reason why I go to wikileaks to find out what the real deal is. US coverage is a joke. I miss Walter Cronkite...at least he had the balls to call a spade a spade.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Making sure the story is correct before reporting it is a good habit. Good for CNN and Fox

:wow:

Fox and accurate are words that don't fit within the same logical constructs!
