The Standard Parathyroid Operation. Since 1925 the treatment for parathyroid disease (hyperparathyroidism) has been surgery. Who is Eligible to Have a MIRP Mini-Parathyroid Operation? The operation you get (parathyroid, heart bypass, breast cancer, etc) depends on the skill and experience of your surgeon. Less experienced surgeons perform mini-parathyroid surgery only when a scan is positive. The better experts perform mini-parathyroid surgery on 100% of patients regardless of scan results.

Surgery Cure Rates. The cure rate following parathyroid surgery can be dramatically altered by the experience of the surgeon. Even the New York Times has written about this problem. Be careful about choosing your surgeon for your parathyroid operation.

Do I have Just One Bad Parathyroid Gland? is by far the most common question ever asked. About 88 percent of all patients have just one bad parathyroid gland (a single tumor) and three normal parathyroid glands. About 12% have two bad glands.

Parathyroid Anatomy is described on this page--if you understand parathyroid anatomy you will understand why parathyroid surgery requires a lot of experience. The more experience your surgeon has, the higher the chance of cure and the lower the chance of complications.

Needing a Second Operation -- About 10% of people need a second parathyroid operation because their surgeon with too little experience could not find the bad parathyroid gland. They've only tested my thyroid through blood draws. I'm borderline anemic, going anemic during periods. They had me take iron pills for a few months then said it wasn't making enough of a difference to continue.

Symptoms ofParathyroid Disease (Hyperparathyroidism)

· Loss of energy. Don't feel like doing much.Tired all the time. Chronic fatigue.

o Been that way since my son was born. The doctors haven't figured out the cause.

· Just don't feel well; don't quite feel normal.Hard to explain but just feel kind of bad.

o Quite often.

· Feel old. Don't have the interest in things thatyou used to.

o I've felt old all my life. Prefer to hang out with the older crowd notmy peers.

· Can't concentrate, or can't keep yourconcentration like in the past.

o This is getting worse.

· Depression.

o Recognized the symptoms in May 2007. Was on meds but not anymore. Think I should be back on it. I get into moods and go off on Benny quitefrequently. If it's late evening I justgo to bed and then wake up normal lol

· Osteoporosis and Osteopenia.Bones hurt;typically it's bones in the legs and arms but can be most bones.

o I ache a lot but don't know that it's in mybones.

· Don't sleep like you used to. Wake up in middleof night. Trouble getting to sleep.

o Lately been asleep within 30 minutes of layingdown

· Tired during the day and frequently feel likeyou want a nap.

o 24-7. Always tired no matter how much sleep I get

· Spouse claims you are more irritable and harderto get along with (cranky, bitchy).

· Forget simple things that you used to remembervery easily (worsening memory).

· Gastric acid reflux; heartburn; GERD.

o Something else since my son was born. I always contributed it to tearing nearly allthe way.

· Thinning hair (predominately in middle agedfemales on the front part of the scalp).

· Kidney Stones.

o Never had kidney problems.

· High Blood Pressure (sometimes mild, sometimesquite severe; up and down a lot).

· Recurrent Headaches (usually patients under theage of 40).

· Heart Palpitations (arrhythmias). Typicallyatrial arrhythmias.

Most people with hyperparathyroidism will have 4 - 6 ofthese symptoms. Some will have lots of them. A few people will say they don'thave any... but after an operation they will often say otherwise. 95% of peoplewith hyperparathyroidism will have 3 or more of these symptoms. In general, thelonger you have hyperparathyroidism, the more symptoms you will develop.
