The same element can have different isotopes that react the same chemically, but have different degrees of stability. Carbon for instance, 12C is stable, but 14C wants to emit a couple particles and turn into Nitrogen. Both are naturally occurring isotopes.

No, he's right. Isotope is the correct, operative word. The news reports have indicated that in Fukushima the material officials indicated could escape is an isotope of iodine.
