In order for poisoning to commence you would need to absorb. No confusion about the sequence of how that happens.

I am just bothered by the absorb part. If the emitter is external, then that radiation does its damage and is gone. But if you are ingesting the emitter, then that continues to do its damage until it stops emitting, or is expelled.

I think the chart is really just meant to show relative exposures and how they stack up to one another. That's all. I don't think it's meant to be inclusive of other types of exposure. Which, if you really think about it, would be next to impossible to chart. You can measure a population's exposure based on proximity, but it's much different to try to figure out how many people ate the radiated spinach.

BTW: Unless you are standing close to the source of the ionizing radiation, radiation isn't the problem -- contamination is, and that doesn't care how close you are to the source, but how much ends up internally.

Close is a realative term. According to the inverse square law, If you double your distance from the source you cut your expousure to 1/4. The contamination you are refering to would be tiny particles that are

each the source of ionizing radiation. once inside you, you are catching everything they throw.

Dose assigned from internal absorption over a 50 year period is assigned in one year. So the radiation from say PU239 over a 50 year period is assigned at once. This is derived from bioassay (in vitro or in vivo).

in vitro = urine or feces

in vivo = whole body count, chest count etc....

it all depends on the isotope

Well I live in washington State and a 3am today I went for a wee wee

I was suprised that my todger lit the entire bathroom up and I didnt need to turn the light on

Sounds like a prostate problem, They can implant some radioactive pellets in your prostate to help with that, but they

have to go in through the back door.

The same element can have different isotopes that react the same chemically, but have different degrees of stability. Carbon for instance, ¹²C is stable, but ¹⁴C wants to emit a couple particles and turn into Nitrogen. Both are naturally occurring isotopes.
