Russia, Arab League, Now Condemn Attacks On Libya

Russia which abstained from the United Nations vote that approved the imposition of a no-fly zone has condemned the Western coalition's bombing and missile attacks on Libya as excessive--separately the Arab League now wants to reconsider its endorsement of the mission.

A top Russian official called for "an end to indiscriminate force" and also said 48 Libyan civilians had been killed in the attacks by France, the U.K. and the U.S., which included airforce jets, cruise missiles and bombers.

"We believe a mandate given by the UN security council resolution – a controversial move in itself – should not be used to achieve goals outside its provisions, which only see measures necessary to protect civilian population," Alexander Lukashevich, Russia's foreign ministry spokesman, said.

At the same time, Amr Moussa, secretary general of The Arab League has now criticized the attacks, even though he had been instrumental in getting the organization on March 12 to endorse a no-fly zone paving the way for the Western powers to get the UN Resolution 1973. The UN Security Council approved "all measures necessary" to protect civilians in Libya from attacks by Muammar al-Qathafi's forces in the civil war in the North African country.

Moussa, who is also running for president in Egypt's September presidential vote said: "What has happened in Libya differs from the goal of imposing a no-fly zone and what we want is the protection of civilians and not bombing other civilians."

Moussa may have been rattled by images broadcast around North Africa and the Middle East said to show funeral services for dead Libyan civilians. Libyan television also showed hospital images of people said to have been wounded in the coalition attacks.

Moussa said he will call an Arab League meeting to reconsider Arab approval of the Western coalition military intervention in Libya.

Arab League = organisation almost as useless as the UN. They gave approval to no-fly-zone (but expected UK/France/US to do the work--which should have been THEIR responsibility all along)!

What a scam! The Arab League gets exactly what they want, Gaddafi out of power while condemning the west. I say we get the hell out of there and let the middle east destroy itself. The only countries we should be concerned with in the middle east are those with a possible nuclear threat.

Russia could have vetoed the Security Council resolution for the No-Fly Zone. They did not. This is political posturing at home, nothing more.

I was referring to the Arab League.

Ok so let me get this straight. The Russian government decides to do nothing but then stands back and criticizes everybody who decided to do something about the injustice that was going on. A cowardly move if you ask me.

Yep on the Russians. In my opinion its nothing more than home political posturing. Keep the home crowd base happy that they are still trying to take a role in international affairs.

As for the Arab League- it would be interesting to get the factual information about what part of the international attack they disapprove of. I think it might have to do with collateral damage to civilians in the crosshairs. And for that I agree with the Arabs. We should not allow Ghadacrazy to exploit this as *proof* that the West is Islamophobic and hates Arabs via the loss of innocent life. It will be interesting to see when the final numbers come out.

They were willing to do anything so in my book they have no ground to criticize.

The Arab League knows that enforcing a no fly zone is far from a clean procedure. Don't fool yourself this is all politics. They don't want to be seen as working with the west and killing fellow Arabs.

I wonder if this means we should stop our participation in the UN declared war.
Not exactly, but we should withdraw from the UN (and all its shenanigans) in the first place!
Some here said we were justified because of the blessings of the Arab League. Now that they are condemning the attacks do we withdraw?

I guess all we can hope for is that the people see through this nonsense.

All I hope for is for innocent civilians to not get butchered. I know some don't give a ####### about that, which in my book makes them deserve such fates.

These Middle East problems/wars have been going on since time began and it will never end. I hate how we get involved or dragged into these problems that will never be resolved. And then we look like the bad guys. There's no winning to this madness.

Sounds more like Russia is saying "This is your baby".

On the other hand one could compare this to all the "present" Votes Obama was famous for casting.
