I just finish my tax return for 2010 and will mail the return in, but did not have time to get a tax id number for my wife. I will be submitting the AOS in a couple of days. My tax status is "file separately" but fill in the social security id area "unable- nonresident".

I know the process of getting the Tax ID number is a long process which by now will pass the Tax deadline. And it will would drag on CR process because I need to get her passport notarize in china and snail me to submit with the W-7 form to obtain a Tax ID to file in with my 2010 Tax and then wait for it to file to US gov.

I could have gone the route of file single and file an tax addmenment later, but thought if I file married but separately will help show a better boni fi marriage. That's my thinking. If I file single it will be a red flag during the interview.

If anyone has gone through this any information will help. Can anyone tell me the benefit of getting the Tax ID be of any help for the CR-1 process?

If you were filing Married Filing Jointly and you would see you would get a bigger refund back but I do not believe getting the Tax Id would help on your CR-1!
