Hey Everyone

How are you all doing? I have a question to ask - my daughter may want to join me. She thinks she'll complete her senior year of high school before making the move. At that time, she'll be 18. How do we go about doing this?

Thanks for any and all assistance

USC spouse would need to petition for her... that would be the quickest

YMMV

Hmm - will you be close to US citizenship then? You may be able to finish that up (looks like it's taking 4-5 months on average depending on where you're going through) and then you, yourself can petition for her as well.

She's just in grade 11 this yr? So she had another year before she finishes highschool, right? I cannot remember how much younger then my daughter she was :)

I've just applied for my 10 year GC. I checked out the I-130 and I should be able to petition for her as I'm a permanent resident, she's my daughter and under 21.

Yes, she has one more year of high school. She just turned 17 in January. Her other question to me is "Mom, what if I come for university?" So I'm trying to find out what that will entail cause I'll bet the course selection is different.

I think it is faster for your husband to file for her since he is a USC. As for attending College or University all she would have to do is have her High school transcript sent to the college she wants and take an ACT or SAT test. She can actually do those test while still in Canada. Just log on to act.org and she can see test dates available in Canada and where. Although it may be easier for her to take the test in Chicago. She will be allowed to get financial aid and grants many are available for her too.

My oldest started College and is in his second semester, the second will be starting this fall. How time flies.

Also depending on the time it takes to get processed you may want to start it a bit sooner rather than later since she will also have 6m to enter. So she should have time to finish up and move without delays.

Good advice, Ontarkie!

She should start looking into what schools she's interested in and what their entry requirements are. The US college application process is a bit more in depth than in Ontario from what I've learned watching my sister in law apply. Some schools use the common application, some require their own application with an essay or additional information and fees. She should also prepare for the SAT or ACT in advance and take that relatively soon.

Going to school in the US is a great opportunity. Good luck to you both!

Now she could just go to a local community college near you and I think she can avoid taking the SAT's no (no SAT's are required in VA anyway for community college)? The beauty of Community college is that you can start the first 2 years of your degree at a much cheaper tuition and the community colleges have agreements with surrounding 4 yr institutions which allow the student to transfer their credits to the larger university (providing grades are good of course) and get their diploma from the 4 yr institution.

Since your daughter will be a resident of the state, she shouldn't have any trouble applying to community college. I'd look into that....the price of a 4 yr school can be brutal and this option helps out with the $$$.

So far 1 of our 3 kids is doing that and frankly we wouldn't be able to afford the more expensive tuition if they didn't
