Medical Translation

Hi All,

My wife, surprisingly, decided to take my advice and collect a medical history from her family prior to her first prenatal care appointment. But we've stumbled on one thing that neither of us seems able to translate properly: тонус матки. My wife describes it as a tightness of the uterus, possibly severe enough to make it impermeable to blood and oxygen. The closest English translation I could find is "uterine atony," but the symptoms associated with it appear to be the exact opposite of тонус матки.

Does anybody (or anybody's SO's) know the correct English word for this affliction so my wife can tell her doctor that it's in her family's history?

Braxton-Hicks contractions, maybe?

I found "uterine hyperstimulation" on wikipedia, but that seems to be гипертонус, not тонус.

I wish I could help. My wife often has all types of problems with her "female parts" yet can't seem to find a doctor to diagnose her with anything. "In Russia of course they take care of zis." I'm hoping she'll get the "cure" when she goes back over there one of these days. Until then, it's "oh I have a so much pain and hurt."

I can not provide you with a translation, but I can tell you that this is a diagnosis 1/2 to 1/3 of pregnant women in Russia receive... it's diagnosed by ultrasound and in most cases it has absolutely no adverse effect (but women are advised against hard labor, lifting heavy items and enjoying risky sports).

Before my wife was a lawyer, she was a nurse. I ran this by her and asked if it's the same thing as "uterine atony," and after looking at some online sources she says yes, that's a correct translation. It could be that your wife is misremembering, or they wrote her condition down wrong? You probably should find a Russian-speaking healthcare person, preferably in pediatrics, to get a definitive answer though. I wouldn't trust anyone one the internet to my wife's health.

To follow up, we never did find any indication of what Тонус Матки is, but we've had our first prenatal visit and ultrasound and so far everything looks great according to the doctors. I'd share pictures of the ultrasound, but right now my kid is little more than a tiny black speck. So, nothing to see yet.
