Ah, so history repeats...The last time we drummed out an effective and legitimate US President was during the Nixon administration; subsequently leading to the inane, and archaic presidency of Jimmy Carter...

Those of us old enough to remember can certainly see the the faulty trend developing again.

It's a real shame.....

The Reichstag Fire decree and the Enabling act exploited loopholes in the constitution which had been created a few years earlier when there was a general fear of extremists taking their fight into the streets.

I'm not a big fan of the Nazi-comparison because I think it oversimplifies what is really happening, but when it comes to the slow erosion of constitutions, the comparison is very valid because it shows that even the best constitution can be turned into meaningless blabbering when it comes into the wrong hands.

Hmm....so we're allowed to make comparisons between the Nazis and the Bush administration, but not between the Nazis and Islamofascists

Since Islamofascism is a made up term, you'd have to define just what it is, who endorses it and what government enforces it. Dogmatism is definitely an element of fascism, but if that were the only criteria, then Fundamentalists Christians would be on equal grounds as Islamic Fundamentalists. Can we now start using the term Christofascists?

The nazis aren't comparable to the Bush adminstration - but if we're looking for a parallel about how legislation intended to protect a country against a perceived external threat can effectively undermine the founding values of that country its certainly a valid one.

OH please!!! Don't even TRY to compare the likes of GDubya with Richard Nixon. Nixon was more of a president, leader, and international expert than Bush could ever dream of. If we end up with another Democrat in office, it will be because of the ineptness of the current administration. Period. If the republicans can come up with a candidate that can distance himself from the failed policies of the Bush administration, they may have a chance of getting them elected. Otherwise, thank Bush for handing the White House, and Congress, over to the Democrats.

George Bush: Lies, Lies and More Lies Honest Abe he's not. But for just a second last week we had a rare moment of truth (albeit off the cuff and under pressure from a dogged reporter) when President Bush admitted that the Iraq war had "nothing" to do with the war on terror. All that of course changed Thursday during Bush's first in a brand-new series of PR speeches designed to justify the Iraq war, bolster the Busheviks' image and perhaps salvage the midterm elections for Republican incumbents.

I came upon 9 principles in my reading and studies, which I would like to share with you all.

THE 9 PRINCIPLES OF FASCIST PROPAGANDA

1. The Big Lie - Always choose the big lie over the small; the masses will believe it more readily.

2. Focus Use only one or at most two selling points.

3. Repeat Use them over and over until even your enemies know them by heart.

4. Blame - Never waver, acknowledge no doubt, always blame - never credit - the other side.

5. Provoke - First attract attention, then appeal to emotions.

6. Crisis - Shades of gray don't work: The issues must be black and white: love/hate, good/evil, life/death.

7. Emotional Symbols - Good slogans have no literal meaning, only a strong emotional appeal.

8. Pander - Ignore intellectuals and reasonable arguments; target the unthinking masses with powerful emotional pitches.

9. No Limits Ignore all moral limits when you believe stakes are high.

In the eighteen months since I happened upon these principles -- extracted and interpolated from Hitler's "Mein Kampf," written while he was in prison in 1925 -- every significant Republican statement I have heard or read uses one, two, three or all of them. The longer the statement, the greater the number of principles used. These principles are not printed on the first page of the Republican Party's campaign playbook. Nonetheless, Karl Rove, campaign Kommandant, and Frank Luntz, chief propagandist of the GOP, know them all implicitly and use them to great effect.

Copy these principles and keep them at hand. These principles will help you dissect their statements and learn exactly which emotional buttons they are pushing. Understanding their tactics of emotional manipulation is the first step towards comprehending how sinister these people are and toward defending yourself against their ubiquitous attacks. Thanks!

The issue then becomes not so much about Bush, but the state he leaves the country in when he leaves office. Weakening / watering down the constitution makes it much easier for someone more unscrupulous to do away with it entirely.

Then one day you wake up and wonder how things got so bad, so quickly.
