Which is all again, your opinion about what constitutes significance.

significance is a very personal thing when you're using it the way you are.

I'm not using it in that way, and you very well know that.

Of course at the end of the day, personal significance is completely irrelevant to the scientific side of things. You already know that though.

Meanwhile, people in the United States are dying from MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph that has been shown to be present on hog farms.

now the facts.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU7hrtxBWmA

The number one place to get it is in the hospital

According to this everyone has it on their skin

Florida currently has more concealed-carry permit holders than any other state, with 1,269,021 issued as of May 14, 2014

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

Let's go with numbers....

Less than 100,000 people get sick from MRSA.

Less than 19,000 actually die from MRSA infections.

Now how many people eat meat?

Next.

Using your logic:

Fewer than 4,000 died on 9/11.

Meh, no big deal. Next.

Until there's a cure for heart disease, various forms of cancer, Chronic lower respiratory diseases, diabetes, influenza, etc. which are all many times more deadly than MRSA, then I think we can leave well enough alone and devote our research to places that matter.

Yeah, might be my opinion, but it's an opinion weighed by the numbers and statistics, whether you like it or not.

Of course there again, all of this is placed on the idea/belief that living longer is a 'good' thing. I won't get into it, but while self preservation is fine and dandy, living longer may not be the 'best' thing for society overall.

At the end of the day, numbers wise in comparison to the amount we've killed after, no it's not.

Of course, you're talking about an intentional attack (or self inflicted depending on who you ask) versus a viral infection.

I love people like you.

Critical thinking skills are non-existant.

All you can see is what's right in front of you, but your peripheral vision is completely lacking.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Just because things don't matter to you or you don't think they're worthy of research/study, does not mean they are insignificant. Your critical thinking skills have determined there is not adequate justification to accept the conclusions of many studies posted on VJ. Groups (not just you) of highly educated scientists who have studied these concepts for years have used their critical thinking skills to determine there is adequate justification to accept these conclusions are true. You think this stuff is insignificant because you don't really know anything about it except for the numbers. I think it is significant (not just this thread, but threads in general that you just write off) because I have a background in science and I perform scientific research on a daily basis.

I applaud you for coming up with your own conclusion to the data, but your opinion against the opinions of scientists is going to get shot down when all you ever say is it is "insignificant". Critical thinking also involves backing up your "theory" with actual data that goes along with what you say. The data you present never backs up what you're trying to say is insignificant.

Obviously 100,000 sick and 20,000 dead people are insignificant to Paul.

Maybe I've misunderstood, but I don't think that in threads like these Paul is trying to say that he rejects the conclusion of studies that find the correlation between two different variables statistically significant. After that relationship has been "proven", it is then up to individual opinion as to whether the correlation is sufficiently strong and the outcome sufficiently negative to warrant no longer engaging in the risky behavior. Paul's opinion does not affect public health policy regarding second hand smoking and MRSA containment.

But why would anyone listen to anything Paul has to say on the subject when it's so blatantly obvious he doesn't understand a darn thing about the topic? First he refers to MRSA as a viral infection- it's not, it's bacterial. Secondly he keeps obsessing over MRSA as though it's the end all issue with regards to food safety in the US- it isn't. There's a whole gamut of other nasty sh!t, causing food borne illness here, that cost the US over $152 billlion in 2009. That's no trifling amount, by any stretch. Food safety is a significant issue, regardless of what dr Paul thinks.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2010-03-03-food-borne-illness_N.htm

Yeah everyone can have an individual opinion about the correlations and outcomes. But some of them are worth significantly less than others.
