Not according to Patton. Didn't the Brits get pushed all the way back to Tobruk, by the Italians, no less?

In 1941 we retook Tobruk. Then Rommel and the Afrika Korps came onto the scene and pushed the British and Commonwealth forces all the way back to El Alamein. And that's where Montgomery stopped them and drove them back across North Africa.

The US forces landed in North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942, which had little bearing on the whole campaign other than to get them blooded in theatre.

Ironically in Operation Torch, it was Vichy Units that were defending against the allies...sort of puts the whole French thing in full circle doesn't it.

And yes, we Americans made a lot of mistakes in North Africa, which was good in terms of learning for the future invasions.

The Vichy French were probably still a bit upset about about Operation Catapult, at Mers-el-Kébir, when the Royal Navy did their best to stop the remaining French naval units falling into Axis hands by trying to sink the lot of them.

De Gaulle never forgave Churchill for that little episode.

Patton may have been biased. My father landed at Oran on November 8, 1942. The Americans did not do much in N. Africa in 1942. They had better success in 1943. The British did OK but mostly using our tanks and airplanes.
