this is complete and unadulterated bs

that you called me a pig is true, but i don't ever recall seeing an apology for such

I am sure I did apologize.
It should remove all it can, if it can't remove something note what it was unable to remove, I think it tells you what the type of problem is, and where it;s located on your hard drive. If it is unable to remove something don't just delete the file, often there are other files involved and those also need to be removed or things will just keep reinstalling.

If I'm still here by that time, post what it wasn't able to remove and I'll search out removal instructions for you

If you want you can buy it after you're done, I myself bought a year subscription to their pro version and have been happy with that.

It is already up to 114 spyware... I don't understand how that could happen. I had Norton scanning every week and Adaware too

i'm sure you didn't apologize ;)

but no big deal, i'm not that concerned about it

adaware is good for a free program, if you want something good, get the 2 year spysweeper.

for adware it's recommended to have at least 2 programs that do that.

(i actually have 4) :P

OK Charles, if I didn't apologize I'm sorry. I really do believe I did though because, believe it or not, I don't make it a habit to call people names... even in anger and I should not resort to that even when you push me to the point of turning all my hair gray. :P

What are other adware programs that are free?

spybot is one that is. i have it, adaware, spysweeper, and pest patrol

I've seen norton not remove things before, it's not that unusual. Adaware, if it wasn't up to date on profiles it might miss something. OR if the problem you're experiencing IS infact virus related there are a few virii that actually willl shut those programs down when you become infected so they won't work

I'm actually more concerned with the 2 hacking tools than the 114 spyware things. I knew someone was trying to hack my PC (they started sending me a lot of links in spam emails when I joined a Yahoo group and someone told me that's how hackers send viruses) but I did not click any links and I deleted the emails immediately every time I got one and I had Norton scanning emails so I didn't think anything had gotten in.:blink::wacko:

you can get a hacking tool (called a trojan or root kit) by just visiting the wrong web site (called a drive by install) and not just from email. that one link psychocat put on - i went to it, it has an active x control required. i left it, i don't download active x controls if i don't trust the site.

you can get rid of lots of spyware items called tracking cookies just by deleted cookies in ie, also dump your cache too. i do that before i run scans as i dislike being annoyed with the "found something" noise and it's a stupid tracking cookie (btw yahoo does send those to you). dumping cookies and cache will also speed up the scan process.

once you get your comp up and running, i highly suggest you spend the $30 for the 2 year subsciption for webroot spysweeper. right now mine picks up almost 150,000 items

http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kafir#According_to_scholars

[begin quote]

"Kafir (Arabic: كافر kāfir; plural كفّار kuffār) is an Arabic word meaning an unbeliever, a person who hides, denies, or covers the truth. In cultural terms, it is a derogatory term [1] used to describe an unbeliever, a Muslim of a differing sect, or an apostate from Islam. It is usually translated into English as "infidel" or "unbeliever".

and

"In today’s world, scholars recommend that Muslims should use the same term “People of the Book” with Christians and Jews, or call them Christians and Jews, if they wish to be called so, or simply call them “non-Muslims”.and

"In South Africa the word kaffir eventually became a racial slur, applied pejoratively or offensively by some whites to African blacks or to dark-skinned persons in general. (ethnic slur)". [end quote]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http:// www.answers.com/topic/kafir-3

"The noun kafir has one meaning:

Meaning #1: (South Africa) an offensive term for any Black African

Synonyms: kaffir, caffer, caffre"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http:// www.answers.com/topic/kafir-5

"Etymology

The word kaafir is the active participle of the Arabic verb kafara which means "to cover" (from consonantal root k-f-r). As a pre-Islamic term it described farmers burying seeds in the ground, covering them with soil while planting. Thus, the word kaafir implies the meaning "a person who hides or covers the truth". In Islamic parlance, kafir is a word used to describe a person who rejects Islamic faith, [2] and carries the weight of a racial epithet". [end all quotes]

VP- I actually think Arabic is a very ancient interesting language-I was interested in learning more; especially when terms that I had never heard of before were applied to a whole collective.

Here are some quotes, of course there are dozens more, but I do not have the time to post them all. This was found on a simple Google search.

It is indeed an offensive manner in which to describe non-muslims.

Liefde is een bloem zo teer dat hij knakt bij de minste aanraking en zo sterk dat niets zijn groei in de weg staat

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

also note that hackers are not usually sending out spam emails - that's some other yahoo trying to make money by getting you to visit the site they are spamming for. there may be a virus in the email but if you have a yahoo account it gets scanned before you download it.

never download or open anything though from someone you don't know......and even if it is someone you know, scan it right after download.

And not one of those sources is Arab.

I said earlier that I'm sorry if others use it to mean something it doesn't.

South Africa is Arab now?

I also did not apply any term collectively.

I don't wish to discuss this any further... I am sorry if I offended you. I also had this conversation already with Ewok and I promised that even though it is NOT foul language or derogatory and wasn't directed at anyone that I would not use it on his board anymore and I have not used it (until today because of you and your drama) since that conversation.

Whilst not an IT professional, I have successfully maintained my PCs and those of friends, family and workmates, well enough for them to ask me back again when they get new problems, however complex. I have no computer qualifications other than one I consider to be one of the most important. Experience.

When I got my first PC, I knew no-one else who had one who could help me with my problems so I had to figure them out for myself or live with the problems. Because of this I found real solutions which any layperson can understand that are effective, SIMPLE and easy for non techies to do.

So, to the problem. One of my first big griefs was with antivirus and I spent months figuring out the ins and outs. Bottom line was this. Firstly, software put out there by Symantec, (the Norton range), is what is considered in the home market as bloatware. ie extremely complex and system hungry and as one person pointed out extremely difficult to remove from your system. It buries itself into everything and can actually cause more trouble than the benefits it is supposed to have. My recommendation is unless you are a business with Symantec support available as a paid service, avoid at all costs. There is better software avilable for the home user.

So get everything "Norton" off your system first. Uninstall as much as you can. If you are careful, remove all instances of "Symantec" and "Norton" from the registry. This can be done with the 'Regedit' function in Windows but is time consuming. There are quicker ways and I'll tell anyone who asks.

Keeping your system clean and running smoothly is easy with the right software and you do not need a s**tload of it or spend a single penny.

Firstly download and install the wonderfully named CrapCleaner. Once installed you need only click one button every now and then and it does a great job of removing rubbish that clogs and slows your system. Just this one piece of software fixes a whole gammet of problems with one click.

CRAPCLEANER HOMEPAGE

Also you need 2 or 3 different spyware programs. One of the best, and is the only one that is completely free, is Spybot and everyone should use this and keep it updated with the free updates.

SPYBOT HOMEPAGE

I also use one other spyware program, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal, and again it is completely free for this version, as are the updates. This coupled up with Spybot get rid of practically all spyware and trojan problems that most people are likely to encounter, and both work with 'one click' capability.

AD AWARE SE PERSONAL HOMEPAGE

Use the above 3 programs every week or two at least. It takes 10 minutes.

Now you need to replace your antivirus with one that is not only reliable but user friendly and effective.

People in the UK with a bit of experience can use AVG from Grisoft, (Google it, you'll find it). It takes a little bit of setting up but they do provide walk throughs. However, I personally use one that is even easier to use and set up and found problems on my system that both Norton and AVG missed when I installed it.

AVAST 4 HOME EDITION DOWNLOAD PAGE

All you really need to do is install it and it will do everything else. You can tweak it later when you have got to know it a bit better.

With just the above software and about 10 mins every couple of weeks, my system and everyone who has had me clean their systems, have been trouble free since.

Another thing I would recommend that you get into the habit of doing is Defragmenting your hard drive about once a month. It takes a bit of time if you have left it a long time since you're last defrag but subsequent defrags will be quicker. Windows has a defragger built in and it does the job well.

I hope anyone reading this benefits and has happy, trouble free PCing from now on.

One last thing I would heartily recommend is a simple and effective firewall. Windows firewall is about as much use as a fart in a windtunnel although it does do some things well. Personally I use the completely free version of Zonelabs's ZoneAlarm. If you are using the above software it is not neccessary to pay for the Pro version of ZoneAlarm. Once installed it will ask you on each program's first attempt to access the internet, you can give each program permission at that point and from then on ZoneAlarm will run silently protecting you from both incoming AND outgoing attacks and leaks. Rarely ZoneAlarm can cause problems but they are almost always compatibility problems with your ISP's servers rather than your PC or software. Also remember to disable Windows firewall if you install this.

ZONELABS ZONEALARM FREE FIREWALL DOWNLOAD PAGE

ps It's been a long long time since I wanted to put a sledgehammer through my monitor because I use the software above. All are easy to install, use and maintain and all are free.

pps I DO NOT recommend using flashy email clients like Incredimail. They can cause a lot of problems. Yes, they have pretty and cute features but those very features can give your system grief. Stick With Outlook Express.

Well, since I have a 4 PC / 2 Mac network running on a gigabit LAN with a Windows Server2003 domain controller here at home, I reckon I'll have to pass on that little tip. LOL

Antivirus - I use AVG. They have a free version, I use the "paid-for" version. I have to. The free one won't run on Server2003 or XP 64 bit systems. If I had the money, I'd buy Panda. (I'm a Panda reseller, and I STILL can't afford to buy it for my server and workstations. LOL!)

Adware/Malware scanners - Ewido (now owned by AVG), Spybot

Email - for the love of Bob, use Opera or Thunderbird or Eudora! Anything but Outlook Express!

If you want to really know what's on your computer, run HijackThis! and post the results here.
