I need to enlist the help of some of you computer geniuses here on VJ..... I keep getting this error message.... the box says

CAAPP.EXE - APPLICATION ERROR "The instruction at "ox111occoo"referenced memory at "0x1110cc00". The memory could not be 'read'. Click on OK to terminate the program."

When I click OK it comes up once more and then when I click OK again it closes my antivirus and hangs up my email program and makes IE go nuts too.

I researched caapp.exe and found out that is the prgram Norton (my anti-virus) uses to run in the background to scan various things all the time and I also found out that other people have had problems with it too. I uninstalled Norton (thinking maybe it just got corrupted somehow and I could just take it off and re-install it and everything would be hunky-dory) which was a pain in the BUTT because you can't just remove the stupid thing from your PC NOOOOOO you have to run a removal tool and getting it to run while your PC is messed up because of this ####### is like pulling teeth! Anyway--got it off and then re-installed it... now I got this error message again. It affects my internet and everything. I can't click on certain links when it's messed up (like the link to the smiley box here on VJ  OR the stupid link to the Norton removal tool  ), I can't connect to my wireless network, I can't send or recieve emails from Incredimail.... it's just a big pain in the neck!

After I reported the error a window came up telling me to check the hard drive or disk for errors and I followed the directions for that but I don't have a clue what I did or even what the results were.

Anywone familiar with this? Does Norton just SUCK? Do I just need to take it off forever? Can I get my money back for the 141 days I still have left on my subscription? What other virus protection can I have for a reasonable price? I swear I'm going to be bald soon because this ####### is gonna make me pull my hair OUT! :(:help::help::help: Please :help::help::help::(

Do you have a tech help line number that came with your subscription? I would call them and explain it to them and see if they can't help you.

Good Luck, computer woes are a huge pain in the a$$ - we just had to buy another new modem yesterday because Tropical Storm Ernesto gave us power surges and fried the old one...And we have this big USP protector that our computer is connected too, go figure. We figure the surges probably came thru the phone line (I only have dialup, it's all we can get here  )

did a quick search also. one site says it is part of the autoprotect and email scanning. as i don't run email scanning (yahoo accounts) that could account for why i've not run into this. i have noticed that the autoprotect does tend to eat up my cpu time quite a bit so when it does it turn off the autoprotect (all it seems to do is scan the same stuff all the time). after i have it turned off i turn it back on and usually that keeps my cpu from being redlined all the time on task manager.

some links that might help:

help me! email support

norton help online help

as i don't know what version of norton you are running i can't go thru the help system myself :P

worse comes to worse you can always email them, i've found them to be most helpfull.

Yah I'm trying to remove it again now so I can send an email. They have a tech support number but it's only free if it's for the initial installation. Otherwise you have to pay them to help you fix the problems caused by their program.

Charles, it's Internet Security 2006. I can't disable anything because I can't even get to the control panel or anything. I just got it uninstalled again. I'm afraid to install it anymore but without it I don't know how to connect to my wireless connection.

Edited to say: I'm not rolling my eyes at you but at this stupid Norton #######. LOL

i had that version, the 2002 one. only thing i didn't like about it was it hated webcams :P

try that one link with self help and see what it might have for error codes on it. if that is unproductive send them an email. they are quite helpful.

I've been doing some searching for that error message and have not been able to find that exact one which is a bit unusual...I'm good at this dang it

Anyway one thing I did notice in my searching is there are a couple of virus's that will shut your av down and will give you an application error while doing so.

Might I suggest considering that, that rather than scanning with Norton for the moment, do a search in google for online virus scan, then run either the one on trendmicro's site or panda active scan, see if anything comes up

I actually had a similar message on a work laptop - turned out the machine memory was corrupt and needed replacing.

Now that sounds like what that window was saying after I reported the message... should I take it in?

Is it desk top or laptop compy?

if desktop, easy test to see if it is the memory sticks are to remove all but 1, then boot compy up... replace with next stick (remove/replace method) until it doesnt want to boot any more (bad stick wont boot compy up).

or if not feeling adventurous enough to try that (always touch case BEFORE cards to discharge static electricity!!) then you can just take it in and explain issues to them.

What is an online anti-virus scan that I can trust?

I did that once and almost lost a PC because it infected my PC with all kinds of crazy stuff.

In all probability its the software as has been pointed out above, but its hard to say for sure not knowing anything about the machine or your version of windows.

Its a hassle but one thing I do annually is backup all my files and then completely reinstall windows. I have to do this again sometime this year as I'm running XP SP1, and installing SP2 over the top would cause some serious conflicts.

But try taking off the Norton first, see if that makes a difference - although Norton is notorious for bits a pieces on the PC even after you've removed it.

But corrupt memory certainly is a possibility.

BTW - what brand and model of laptop is it?

Some of the P4 laptops before they went over to centrino heat up so much it can quite conceivably damage the innards of the PC, especially because unlike desktops there is not as much free space for air circulation and coooling.

VP-I am really sorry you are having computer problems and I hope you get them sorted out. :)

I just find it so ironic that on the MENA thread you go labeling the mods/members here collectively as " kafur"--yet when you need help, the very people you used that label for are helping you! I think that says more about their character than yours!

However you try and paint it, you know that word is the most derogatory word used to describe someone who is not Islamic. You could have used other terms like " non-Islamic".

Don't deny saying it; either, here is YOUR quote-

Historically that word is derogatory or at the very least the harshest thing to call a non-Islamic person! Ask anyone who lived in S Africa during apartheid what a "kaffar" is ( kaffar is the local dialect of the word "kafur")......................If they are polite they won't tell you!

Even your fellow MENA friends told you to chose your words more carefully! Those that know and understand Arabic and Islam told you it's not a term to be used "lightly". I asked a friend of mine here what it meant and they would not tell me!

It's an insulting term, madam, and you know it!

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I was thinking about mentioning that myself after she asked if Norton was bad. Personally I really dislike it these days and I used to be an avid fan, so that's saying something.

Since probably around 2004 removing it seems to have become an issue, thus the reason for that extra tool to try after uninstalling it. A problem I've run into though is I've seen that tool not work and leave you unable to reinstal it, or install anything else on the machine because it's left enough behind to prevent it, and ended up having to literally pick through the registry for all instances of Nortan, Symantic NIS and all other possible names or entries they might use.

First of all I don't think you know what you're talking about. I was pointing out that I can't have an opinion on here without being attacked and you have just proven that theory. I was referring to the self labeled "moderate" muslims 'mods' who attack me the same as the non muslims.

I'll also have you know that kafir comes from the root word kufr which means disbelief. A kafir then is one who disbelieves and kufar are more than one. I'm sorry if someone uses it as a derogatory term but it is not. It simply means a non-believer which the majority of the people here would call themselves in reference to Islam anyway since they don't believe in Allah or Muhammad or the Quran or Islam etc etc etc.

The word is in the Quran and I don't take offense to ANYTHING in the Quran. If you're muslim you probably shouldn't either BUT that's on you.

This topic has nothing to do with religion and as I see it you are in violation of TOS by stalking me!
