A lot of questions today! Its all getting so close! So my husband is filling in the I 130, for my part ( my last name) do we use my maiden name ( Segers) as still stated on my passport and all legal documents as far as that goes for my homecountry, or my name by marriage ( Blair ) As also for the other files? Which one to use?

Taking your husband's name is really not common in my country, that is where my confusion comes from. I want it to be Blair though, lol.

Thanks a lot,

T.

can use legal name (Segers) now , for filing the I-130

then have all of your official documents / IDs changed whilst yer waiting for I-130 approval

and then

when handling NVC processing, submit a new G-325A with the DS-230, showing the new name and prior names used.

Good Luck !

Congrats on your recent marriage!

On the I130 you put the name that you want to be on your green card. So yes, you can put your married name :) The marriage certificate it's the link between you & your husband.

*I am not familliar with the laws in your country but if you wish to change your name in your passport or if you want to register a US marriage certificate in the EU I would advise you to have a certified copy of your marriage certificate with an apostille(with the convention of Hague) plus it wouldn't hurt to have a copy of your hubby's passport and birth certificate!

Congrats and good luck!!

Another thing, do i really need to 'legalize' my marriage in my homecountry?

Like, how do you deal with all that?

I'm officially married here but technically not in Belgium?

What about the 'paperwork' for us visa-appliers back in our homecountry?

No! not if you want your green card with your maiden name on!! Your perfectly legal name is now your husband's name(Blair if I remember..?!) So go ahead and put your husband's name on both I130 and G325.

I understand you will be coming back to your homecountry soon, you will have plenty of time to change your passport and all that, trust me it will be a few months before you will need to submit copies of your passport over to the next stage (the NVC)

It's important to get an apostille on your marriage certificate, I suppose all EU countries ask for it!Just ask the city hall to give you info. about how to get one. First step it's registering the certificate in your country than you will take it from there. You can also call the Belgium embassy there in the US, just to double check...

I would call your embassy in the US and make sure but I think you have to declare it/register it in your country also, the term it's something like transcript your foreign certificate wich is why some countries request that you should have an apostille attached to your certificate (in my case I had to translate it too!!)

Your second question was :if you would of got married in your country and not in the US?!

In that case, if the document was written in dutch you would have to translate it in english, and notarized, I think.... i don't know, I got married in the US :D

There must be a way to change your name... If you were married and wanted to go back to your maiden name.....I know this is possible.. I had a friend from Belgium who went back top her maiden name, she changed it in Antwerp I think.......

T.

Use your current legal name. If it changed at marriage, change the applicable documents.

I did get married in the US, now just trying to figure out how I will be able to legalize my marriage in Belgium and change my name into Blair. It should be possible, but for some reason I can't seem to find info on the net as far goes changing my name in my homecountry. I hope I can. Otherwise, well, idk!!

Take your marriage certificate to wherever you would apply for new passport and ask them.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
Understanding the big picture is priceless. Anonymous
