Majority of Americans still understand global warming, despite best efforts of Fox

A new Gallup poll shows that 52 percent of Americans understand that global warming is due more to human activities than natural variation, and only 43 percent believe the opposite. That's marginally better than last year -- 50 to 46, barely holding on to a "believe in science" majority" -- but way down from 2007, when 61 percent knew that basic fact. There have also been slight improvements in how many people think global warming is "exaggerated" -- 43 percent of those polled, down from 48 -- but in 2007 it was 35 percent. It's good that people's knowledge is scrambling back up, but what happened?

Probably crappy media, says Joe Romm at Climate Progress. He cites a World Public Opinion poll that found that 60 percent of those who watch Fox News on a daily basis believe that "most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring," compared to 25 percent who watch CNN daily and only 13 percent who watch public TV or listen to public radio.

From the same poll, it doesn't look good for the fearmongers:

More Than 4 in 10 Say Seriousness of Global Warming Is Exaggerated

The plurality of Americans continue to believe the seriousness of global warming is generally exaggerated in the news (43%) rather than generally correct (26%) or generally underestimated (29%). This is the third year in a row that a substantial plurality has believed global warming's effects are not as bad as they are portrayed, a departure from prior years, when Americans were about evenly split between the three points of view. The percentage who think global warming's effects are exaggerated is down a bit from last year.

No bias there.

Yeah, I love the way they do that. It is almost subliminal.

A crippling tax can save us from global warming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I think OUR congress should pass a resolution urging Japan NOT to rebuild anything. That would help reduce fossil fuel consumption. why not? Seems like the UN and other countries have no problem telling us what we should do. We could win the Global Warming war by attrition. As things get destroyed by nature....just don't put them back.

Wow. So almost 1 in 3 republicans believes in global warming?

You so rarely meet a republican who would admit to thinking that global warming might be occurring. I guess a lot of that 32% must still be in the closet.

So, there are almost 6 in 10 that believe that the seriousness is reflected generally coorrect or is generally underestimated. In other words, there are more (55%) that feel that the seriousness isn't exaggerated than there are that feel the opposite (43%). Or put yet another way, those that say that the seriousness of GW is exaggerated are in the minority.

They live in constant fear of the intellectual fascists who have a stranglehold on the party.

None of it matters. We fixed GW! No more cap and tax and no more CO2 regulation. Yea! GW has been fixed!!

Science obviously matters to a majority of Americans as well as the rest of world, in spite of the very loud and anger-driven, anti-science crowd.

It still does not matter! GW has been fixed! Cry all you want but the effort to regulate CO2 is done!

If this was true, we wouldn't have a large deficit, any debt and no unemployment. After all, the GW fix boiled down to a vote in Congress. They can pass a vote denying that we have a deficit, denying that there is any debt the US owes and denying that we have an unemployment rate ever exceeding 4%. Voila. Of course, passing such votes doesn't fix a first thing but in your eyes, all would be well.
