Welcome to the US. The AOS fee is now $1070 which includes filling the I-485 form, the I-131 form (re-entry permit), and the I-765 (Employment authorization document)--all can be filed at the same time. Most people do this just in case the AOS form gets hung up the other two should continue along and get processed which would then allow you to travel and apply for a job before the GC arrives. Most cases the GC arrives before the other applications are completed.

If it has been more than 14 days and less than 74 days since your arrival as indicated on your I-94, go to the local SSA office and apply for a SSN using the SS5 form. As a K-1 visa holder you are authorized to apply for a SSN. The tick will be getting a person who is properly trained. I will leave it up to you whether you apply for the SSN in your maiden name or married name. If using the married name take along the marriage license (use the original and make certain you tell them you want it back just in case--they will give back all supporting documents, but this is the one and only). If you get any grief about not being able to apply in your married name I would recommend you say, "Thank you" and leave. COme back again and apply in your maiden name. The name on the card is not as important as just getting the number. I think I have shown my SSC to maybe two people in 45 years. All you have to do is rattle off the number and if a question comes up about the name you can mention that you are now married and have not changed your SSC. It should take about 2 weeks to receive the SSN in the mail. As a note: please make certain your name is on the mail box if the last name is different as some postal workers will take it upon themselves to send mail back if they do not reconize the name.

Check out the AOS guides here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/307-applying-for-aos-in-the-usa/ and for the SSN go here: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Good luck.
