Guys,

this is nerve rocking for me. I went to the social security office today AGAIN trying to change my name on the SS card. After the useless SS staff told me I cannot change my last name until I received my employment authorization at this point.

They refused to change my name last time, even I educated them with all the information they need to know that I am ALLOWED to change my last name after I got married. It's so "amazing" that some people just uneducable whatsoever.

anyway, I'd like to know how long it normally take to receive the employment authorization. I cannot do anything right now. I cannot open a bank accounting, I cannot buy property, I cannot have my driver license. It's hassle to change name after I filled all the paper work with my maiden name.

Thanks guys

XH

Yeah its sad that some SSAs are clueless of the process. That happened to me too.

It took 2 months for mine to be approved.

This may be a silly question, but did you take your marriage license/certificate with you to the SSA office when you tried to change your name? Because THAT is the proof they should need for a name change. As far as I know, all the EAD does from the SSA standpoint is show that you're entitled to work (ie if you want to update your card so that it no longer reads "Valid for work with DHS authorization").

I'd hate to see you go back and still encounter the same issue though, so perhaps you may want to call the local office first and get the name of the person you speak to. Hope that helps!

you can open a bank account with SSN card. If you desire - just know it will be in the name on the card.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Yes, I showed them our marriage certificate. I told them that I called SS 800 number and immigration that I was informed I am able to use my married name when the first time trying to change my name. however, it's useless.

anyway, I just have to wait 2 months till I received my employment authorization.

Hopefully, everything else goes smoothly. God bless me.

Thank you all
