Hi there,

My father is a permanent resident of the United States (British by birth) and I wish to join him in the States. I'm 27 and unmarried.

I just have a few questions, like where to begin, and what sort of questions to expect that may pop up in various forms and interviews. Will they want to know my work history? Problem is, my current job is freelance, so my earnings are not that consistent and a lot harder to prove! Will they ask any of this? I'm under the impression that my Dad will sign an affadavit of support to say that he will be financially responsible for me, which he's fine with. How long after I first go out there will I be able to work?

Thanks, any info would be much appreciated!!

If the petition is filed today, you have about 8 years to figure all of this out....

The only kind of visa your father could petition for, and that you would be eligible for, is an F2B. There's an annual limit on the number of those visas that the US government will issue, and there's a considerable line in front of you. As others have mentioned, the current wait is about 8 years. Your father must file an I-130 petition to reserve your place in line. You also must remain unmarried - a permanent resident can't petition for their married sons or daughters. If your father becomes a US citizen (he should be eligible to apply for citizenship five years after becoming a permanent resident) then your petition would be upgraded to F1, which will shave some time off the wait, currently about a year. A US citizen can also petition for married sons and daughters, but the wait for those is about 10 years.

They will ask about your employment history on the forms, but they won't care about your income. Your father will have to sign an affidavit of support and provide evidence of his income, but that will be years from now when your priority date becomes current. You'll be eligible to work the day you arrive with your immigrant visa.
