Chinese Hoarding Salt

So it seems the Chinese are hoarding salt. You can't buy any salt at all in Nanning and the soy sauce is running low as well. Hopefully salt will be replenished soon. We're leaving on the evening train for Guangzhou tonight and will be eating out for a few days but it will be interesting to see what happens.

Anybody else in Guangzhou this weekend?

My fiancée mentioned that salt is also hard to obtain in Sichuan province. They don't seem to be buying the salt for the Potassium iodide but because they fear that somehow sea salt is now unsafe.

Right, they are buying in fear that the sea salt will be contaminated by a Nuclear meltdown in Japan.

most restaraunts and homes in china use magnesium chloride (sea salt). sodium chloride is not commonly found in minable form in china like it is un USA. it's much more expensive there. magnesium chloride is dried from sea water as a substitute, and has been for 8K years...
