Long Distance Relationships

I was talking to a good friend of mine. When he was telling me long distance relationships, such as intercontinental one's, never work. He says on the foreign woman part, especially France, she's usually always cheating.

I am kind of scared after hearing one of my best friends say what he's said. This goes out to foreign women. Would a woman actually allow you to meet her parents, and yet be cheating ?

It would seem to depend on their integrity, their readiness for a relationship, and their willingness to commit.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Whether LDR or not, every relationship always involves certain risks.

I have been with my first boyfriend (an American) for 2.5 years, only to find out he has 4 other girlfriends. To think that we've already met twice in my country and I've already introduced him to my family and friends as my boyfriend.

I was hurt, disappointed, devastated, angry and scared after my first "failed" relationship, but it taught me precious lessons. And I tried to move on and stay positive.

Now, I'm engaged to a wonderful man (a USC). Have faith and continue to nurture your relationship. It won't be an easy journey but it'll be worth it! :)

TIMELINE:

Feb 01, 2011 - Sent I-129F to Texas Lockbox

May 13, 2011 - NOA2 (e-mail notice)

May 28, 2011 - Got case number after 2 weeks of waiting

May 30-31, 2011 - 2-day Medical at SLMEC (without the NVC letter, just the MCN)

July 01, 2011 - Interview (APPROVED despite delayed documents!)

July 14, 2011 - Picked up visa from 2Go Main

July 15, 2011 - Bought one-way ticket for first time immigrant (rate)

I am the women and agree. Yes, men and women can sometimes be devious. Some people think a different "zip code" means it's not cheating. You need to be able to trust your fiancee though and if you don't then you should re-think your relationship.

Unlike regular relationships LDR's require a lot more trust because we're not with the other person for months on end. We can call but we TRUST that no-one else was just there. We TRUST that everything they're saying is true because we have no easy way of finding out if it is or not.

I never ONCE questioned whether Tony was cheating on me because I know enough about his character to know that's not him. He worried about me when I was on Contiki but that was fresh into our relationship and because he read online that Contiki was all about sex and drinking. Since being engaged and starting this process, never a doubt about his loyalty or he about mine (that he told me :P)

I think LDRs have a higher risk of cheating. It's easy to romanticize things. It's easier to create someone in your mind which may or may not gel with the person your other half is. And for the cheaters, it's way easier to cheat and lie because your partner doesn't have the luxury of seeing for him/herself.

That being said, not all LDRs are destined to fail. Or else this site wouldn't exist.

I, for one, don't believe in LDRs and could never be in one myself. It was for this reason that being apart from Mr. Sachinky for the nine months post-marriage was so difficult for me. I can say, with no uncertainty, that had we not been married, we would've broken up for sure. I guess you could say that we were in a long-distance-marriage while immigration processing took their own sweet time, but still, I wouldn't characterize that as a LDR (in the way that I think of it).

I admire people in LDRs for their faith and patience. Both of which, I sorely lack.
