Miami-Dade County Manager Burgess to resign amid voters' revolt

Burgess, a top aide to ousted Mayor Carlos Alvarez, is stepping down, the first casualty after the stunning recall vote Tuesday.

Miami-Dade County Manager George Burgess is set to resign his post Wednesday, less than 24 hours after an overwhelming vote by the public to recall County Mayor Carlos Alvarez.

Burgess has run the county bureaucracy for nearly eight years, serving as Alvarez’s top administrator since the former police director became county mayor in 2004. Burgess was the architect of many policies that ultimately proved to be the mayor’s undoing, including a property-tax rate increase, labor agreements that include pay increases this year, and the publicly financed baseball stadium for the Florida Marlins in Little Havana.

As Alvarez fought to defeat the recall drive, Burgess has quietly campaigned for the job to become CEO of the county-owned public hospital Jackson Health System.

Voters swept Alvarez out of office Tuesday night by a staggering margin: 88 percent voted to recall. More than 204,000 people voted countywide.

Under the county’s governing charter, Alvarez must immediately vacate his post once the election results are certified by the county’s three-person canvassing board. That is scheduled to happen Friday. It is up to the county commission to decide whether to appoint a new mayor until the next countywide election or call a special election.

I noticed in the news, the local "Support the union" rally organized by MOVE ON.COM actually had 2X as many Tea Party counter-protesters show up.

Love it how this becomes an anti-union issue when the major reasons for the recall had to do with across-the-board pay raises alongside a property tax hike. Lets be honest, if at all possible.
