The problem was not that the plant was hit by the flood waters, it's that the earthquake knocked out the power grid which ran the cooling system and flood waters took out the emergency generators that were supposed to kick in in that event.

when you two figure it out, let us know. I know that if there were no nuke plants this would not happen in any case.

Well perhaps you should let the global community know when you've figured out a solution to solve the ever-increasing need for electricity.

Just cut back on use and drill for more oil. Compact flourescent bulbs. I am sure the US congress could tax someone and solve the problem.

So...... the plant's reactors weren't physically damaged by the earthquake or the flood waters.

What has happened is that the power grid has failed (because of the earthquake) and that emergency diesel generators were disabled (by the floodwaters).

Floods are never salt water! Or, wait...NM Just

So then WHAT did the physical damage? there IS physical damage.

The earthquake caused the reactors to scram by protocol. The plants were forced to use other sources of electricity to cool the reactors. Since these plants provide a significant part of Japan's power, and along with grid failures, the plants had to rely on their own back up power. When those other source were inundated by sea water, the plants were forced to go on battery power that proved insufficient. In effect, the earthquake began the cascading failures before the tsunami ever arrived.

Put Michelle Bachman next to a screen showing starving kids being given welfare money - she would vibrate so hard with rage that she could be hooked up to supply the whole of New York.

When she is spent, there are plenty more

No worries - it's clear you don't want to be interrupted as you laugh at the misfortunes of the Japanese people.

Presumably someone will let Japanese VJers in on the joke ;)

Maybe you would agree there ARE misfortunes.

lack of water, ironically

This just gets better. I am going to step back and let the UK forum take over.
