The nuclear disaster in Japan is completely out of control, and none of these self-serving eggheads can tell us what is going to happen.

They are no different than the self serving global warming "scientists"

What a dichotomy, you believe that being college educated is necessary but yet you dismiss that which college education teaches; the value of the education itself being the paper at the end, not the process of learning or what that learning signifies. Self-serving eggheads, hilarious.

No. I do not respect people that are educated and do not respect our education and intelligence by telling us that everything is OK when it clearly is not. Especially when saying it is OK is to their benefit.

Japan and probably a larger part of the world are going to have serious problems in the future because they used nuclear power in an area it should never have been used in. We have no idea how bad it will be yet. Because the only thing anyone can do is run away and hope for the best...or less worst, if there is such a thing.

No, I know you don't respect education, nor do you know how to winnow chaff from wheat when gathering information. It's all grist to your mill of ignorance, that's obvious. No wonder you're a one man army. As I said, fascinating in a paint drying kind of way.

How much Iodoral have you bought now Gary?

None. Most of the fallout will affect only the west coast.

How do you know? Which experts did you trust to believe that's true? Or, is this a product of 'Gary intuition' and the ceratin knowledge that Vermont is the best state in the US, the best place in the world and nothing bad ever happens there?

Are there still RBMKs operating without containment? I read somewhere that Russia still operates 10 or so.

We just saw a documentary on this last month on one of the Russian channels we watch. There are 3 RBMK plants still operating, I don't know how many reactors. All have safety upgrades but only a partial containment upgrade (on the water systems, not the reactor cores). They also changed the flawed graphite control rods.

Another problem is the old reactor #4 at Chernobyl. The concrete sarcophagus was designed to last 30 years maximum, but it is now failing. There are large cracks, some big enough for a person to walk through. A new one won't be ready until 2015. They estimate that over 90% of the uranium fuel mixture still remains in the reactor, covered with a toxic radioactive sludge due to rain water leak. If the sarcophagus collapses there would be more radioactive dust released into the atmosphere than after the initial explosion. Also if the water leaks out, they could have a massive groundwater contamination.

Not the one in the OP that got reprimanded by MIT and forced to retract his statement after it went viral.

So what? There is plenty of real information out there as to what IS AND ISN'T POSSIBLE. If you believe that the West coast is in danger because of this, I can't see one good reason for believing that the East coast would be safe. No logical reason whatsoever.

The in-laws in Spain take in kids that have grown up in the shadow of Chernobyl. I have met a couple of them and you can tell they have health issues.

The great plains.

My wife lived in the shadow of Chernobyl.

Steven Chu this morning: "Japan's nuclear disaster is worse than Three Mile Island."

developing

I had the pleasure of paddling my canoe on lake Windermere in the English Lake District in 1986 when the rain brought down radio activity from Chernobyl. All the animals in that area such as sheep had to be destroyed as they had eaten contaminated grass.

There are still agricultural restrictions today

I was soaked to the skin that weekend out on the lake but I didn't eat any grass so I am still here

The idea that the western USA will get some radiation, is entirely feasible given the direction and speed of the jet stream

Don't drink milk or eat yoghurt, cheese etc and there will be no problem. Iodine is unnecessary and only helps people who have eaten contaminated dairy products

Asking Americans not to eat cheese is a big hurdle to cross - but its the only way

No cheese for Cleo. The fallout will be carried up the west slope of the rockies, trapping a lot of it and condensing it to precipitate out as rain or snow on the great plains. Most will go out the Mississippi basin, Vermont will be spared and guess what? We make cheese and yogurt!

all of the above is at least as accurate as anything the reprimanded scientist said
