Hi,

I am about to become a sponsor to my friend.

He is applying for the Green Card through marriage to a US citizen - his wife (He came to US with a student visa and later married a US citizen).

His wife does not meet the requirements to become a sole sponsor, so I will be the joint sponsor.

I want to mention that she has a kid who is from previous marriage, but lives with them. She made $19 000 for 2010.

That is not enough for her to be the sole sponsor, because they are a family of three (I think she has to had made more than $23 000).

I made $29 000 for 2010. Do I qualify to become a Joint Sponsor?

Also I work 2 jobs. One is a part time, where I have made $10K for 2010, the other one is a delivery driver for a restaurant, where I made $14 000 by the W-2 form, and just last week when I was doing my taxes, I claimed an additional $5000 in unreported tips. I already have a 1040 printed out for 2010, also I have a form 4137 for Unreported Tip Income. Alltogether with my first job plus my second job plus the unreported tips income which I added I have made a total of $29 000 for 2010.

This should be enough to qualify me as a joint sponsor, correct?

I want to mention though, that I am married and have a baby. My wife does not work, and she only reported $7000 (which she made in beginning of 2010 before quiting due to pregnancy) on our Joint 1040 when we were filing the taxes. Is it a problem that I will show a Joint 1040? Also is it a problem that my wife does not work right now? She is not becoming a sponsor, correct?

Only I will be a sponsor? That is my understanding, but correct me if I am wrong. I have to cover 125 % of the poverty line for a family of 3 (my friend's family), is that correct, which I know is about $28 000. If that's true I qualify to become a sponsor. They are not going to want me to cover a limit for 6 people (my family of 3 and my friend's family of 3), correct?

Please, help, I am a little confused with all the guidelines and restrictions.

Thanks.

You need to show current income enough to cover your household count plus the intending immigrant. Your household is 3 (you, spouse, + child) plus 1 for your friend, making a total of 4. Income requirement for 4 is $27,937.

Hi, thanks for the answer.

My next question is:

Giving the information in the first post (my friend's wife makes $19000 and I have a family of 3 and make $29000 per year)

how do we do the i-864 application?

1. Does my friend need to file one i-864 for his wife and myself mentioned in it as two joint sponsors, or do we have to file 2 separate i-864 forms (one for his wife and one for me)?

2. On form i-864 there is a mention of form I-864A. What is that? Please explain and do I need to fill one out (I am married).

My friend does not have money for a lawyer,

and I need to be sure what to write in the form, so please help.

I will be so grateful for your answers.

Thanks in advance.
