The election system doesn't help much; the only people who run are 'in on' the scams.

It's the same here in Alaska. We have like about zero decent people to vote for. It's a choice of the lesser of two evils come every election day.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Do you have control over the existence of Nancy Pelosi?

Is that why you chose to live there?

I chose Vermont for no gun laws and no crime. It also happens to be seismically stable and there are virtually no tornadoes. Winter sucks but we keep hoping for global warming.

You probably shouldn;t take Paul so seriously d'ya think?

Just curious, did you acclimate to the dry heat or did you grow up in it?

Most of Texas does not have "dry heat" The Trans-Pecos maybe, the rest of the state is quite humid, during summer heat spells particularly.

What a lot of Texans don't realize is the fact that if Alaska was to be split in half and made two states, Texas would be the third largest state in the Union.

Most Texan realize, or so I have been told, that if there ever was a thaw in Alaska, it would look a lot like Hawaii minus the coconut trees.

 I am from Texas and my cousin lives in Eagle River AK. He used to say the same thing.

I do remember some sort of sporting event that pitted a team from Alaska against one from Texas. It was many moons ago and I think Bill Clements was our Governor at the time (the first time he was Governor) and he sent the Alaskan Governor some short of gag gift and the Alaskan governor responded by sending him a stuffed white mouse in a shoe box with the title "Texas Polar Bear" on the box. Please don't ask me all the details I just remember the picture in the paper.

Seriously, in 1960 Texans had a serious mental crisis with Alaska being bigger. They just really did not want to accept that. I think it lingers to this day.

Actually out towards the end of the Aluetian chain...it does look a bit like Hawaii with islands coming straight out of the ocean...one big mountain/volcano.

We do have a saying here in Alaska though ...it goes like this...; "The best site in Alaska is a Texan heading south with an Okie under each arm." :)

I used to drink/hang out years back in Eagle River at a country and western hangout called "Tips". Eagle River is about a 20min drive North from Anchorage.

Alaskan's and Texans go at it hard...ever since the pipeline days. Texans have a joke for us...goes like this.. ;"What's an Alaskan call a Texan pipe fitter ? ... punch line... "Boss".

I personally hate that joke...but Texans seems to like it enough.

States like Cali (Illinois and New Jersey are also good examples) are classic examples of where the problem really is spending. There is no revenue problem at all. Between remittances to the Federal Government and local governments that just get more bloated every year, it's a classic spending problem.

If I recall correctly - the specific economic problem in CA is it's dependence on sales tax for State revenues due to property and income taxes being legislatively fixed - something that can't be changed without a unanimous vote in the State Senate.

It goes beyond that. It's what I call California mentality". It's like aliens sucked their brains out one night when they were all sleeping. Californians bring the misery upon themselves...it's like they live for it.

People are like that in Colorado also. I always figured it was because they resent the fact that a lot of Colorado WAS Texas. I used to go skiing at Copper Mountain in Colorado and would tell them "We should have kept this part of Texas"

Maybe California should reclaim Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.

As long as California promises to leave the United States I don't have a problem with that.
