I think this probably shows that nuclear energy is not the best choice for seismically active zones.

We should just occupy France and turn the whole country into one big nuclear plant to supply the entire planet with energy.

Relocate the French (except for the French who will work the plants) to Siberia. They can sleep naked with FSU women and do vodka shots with FSU men.

I think we will be told when to panic, after the essential progenitors have been moved to the salt mines, with women of sufficient sexual appeal to permit the re-population of the planet when they emerge in about 150 years.

Quite a leap, of logic. Did you hit your head?

I'm sorry, you were not suggesting that were the Japanese reactor to melt down the resulting radioactive release would render North America uninhabitable? Silly me.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Is it likely that the workers who have stayed behind to cool the reactors/put out the fire will probably not survive their exposure? IE. they may die in the next few months/years.

No doubt. In the military the term is Mission Oriented Protective Posture. Once you get past the initial radiation sickness, you are good to go for a couple more weeks, before you feel the effects of your bone marrow being destroyed, etc., and can no longer continue. Long before that, you have received enough exposure to have lifelong complications to your health.

nope. I don't think so. just my professional opinion.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

what's an acceptable annual dosage?

For whole body exposures: (r = Rad = 100 ergs per gram of tissue)

Minimal dose detectable by chromosome analysis 5-25 r

Minimal dose readily detectable in an individual 20-75 r

Minimal dose likely to produce vomiting in about 10% of people exposed 75-125 r

Acute dose likely to produce transient disability and obvious blood changes in majority of people so exposed. Also may produce skin redness 150-200 r

Median lethal (fatal) dose for a short exposure 300 r

legal limit 5 Rem a year (whole body dose) for a radiological worker.

lethal dose is around 450 Rem in a short period of time (acute). if can be more depending on the person and the medical treatment received.

Japan uses sieverts 1 Sv = 100 rem

due to the inverse square law radiation dose drops pretty damn fast as you move away from the source

This is not Chernobyl....... it's not even the same reactor design.
