Reuters:

The French embassy in Tokyo warned in a 1 a.m. British time advisory that a low level of radioactive wind could reach the capital -- 240 km (150 miles) south of the plant -- in about 10 hours.

...

Kyodo news agency said radiation levels nine times normal levels had been briefly detected in Kanagawa near Tokyo, but it quotes the metropolitan government that only "minute levels" were found in the capital itself.

"Based on the type of reactor design and the nature of the accident, we see a very low likelihood -- really a very low probability -- that there's any possibility of harmful radiation levels in the United States, or in Hawaii or in any other U.S. territories," said Greg Jaczko, chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, at Monday's White House press briefing.

...

Meanwhile, [California] state health officials said Monday they haven't checked radiation monitors around the state for any rise in levels.

"We're not being told there's any reason to check the monitors," said Michael Sicilia, spokesman for California Department of Public Health. "We generally pull them once a month. If we're told by the feds we need to test them, we'll test them."

The nuke plants (and non reactor facilities) on the west coast routinely monitor the air. Any increase will be noted.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

20 cpm is normal background radiation (outside). When it gets up around 60 cpm, then start to worry.

ETA: 7-12 cpm is typical inside a building

Counts per minute? As in alpha radiation? I guess the counts need to be really ingested for them to be serious at those counts. I think I've heard cpms in the 100+ range for alpha and beta rads to be more 'contaminating' but what do I know.

This thread has links to what they claim are live geiger counters in Tokyo.

if it's in CPM (counts per minute) you don't have a thing to worry about.

normal background is up to hundreds of CPM. it depends on your location on the planet (altitude, granite deposits etc), the size, type and efficiency of your detector.

GM = Geiger Mueller (aka geiger counter) because it operates in the GM area of the gas amplification curve. We also use the ionization, proportional and limited proportional.

We are constantly bombarded by natural background radiation from space, the earth and our food (which comes from the earth). Where do you think the mutations came from to allow us to evolve?

I have a family member who works for Coca-Cola in Tokyo. He and his wife have 4 young children. His company has urged them to return to Atlanta until the situation is "resolved". They haven't decided if they're coming back or not.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
