Hey all,

I know we have not seen our loved ones in a while, but if you have seen yours within the past year, please count your blessings. I have not seen mine in over a year as flights are so expensive to Madagascar.

With oil prices being where they are now, I don't think there are inexpensive flights anywhere. If the distance is far, it's going to cost. But being that Vietnam is still a very communistic country, I can believe competition of airlines into that country is rather limited so your price is probably a little bit more than to other countries right next to Vietnam--for example Thailand. Still, all flights seem a lot more expensive than a couple of years ago.

Vietnam can only control "landing rights" cost. That's it. Thus, the price from the US would be no different than to Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and so forth.

Many international airlines now service Vietnam, including American Airlines. Service began in Jan 2004.

That's exactly right and it's through the "landing rights" that any country can restrict the number of flights (thus competition) and maintain some what of a monopoly on prices for their national airlines. I have not done research into Vietnam specifically, but I would venture an educated guess that there are more flights (especially US based airlines) flying into Thailand than Vietnam. From that assumption, I would venture to guess that the average cost of flight to Thailand vs Vietnam from the same city of origin in the US (say San Francisco or Los Angeles) would be cheaper.

This is my assumption. Have not research into this.

I travelled from Japan to every single country in Asia, many times, for over 3 years. With that said, I can tell you that the prices are not that much different, on a proportional "distance" basis.
